Happy 99th Birthday to Olivia de Havilland

Oscar-winning actress Olivia de Havilland turns 99 today. She was born in Tokyo, Japan, on July 1, 1916.

I've always loved this photo of the young Olivia, dressed for a stage performance as Alice in Wonderland:

In honor of the day, here are a selection of stills from favorite de Havilland films, starting with CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935), costarring Errol Flynn:

One of my very favorite films ever, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938), again with Flynn:

Starring as Melanie in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), for which she received her first Oscar nomination:

Teamed again with Errol Flynn in DODGE CITY (1940) -- not a perfect movie, but they're a perfect team in it!

Her second Oscar-nominated role and one of her very finest performances, HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941) with Charles Boyer:

Starring in the title role PRINCESS O'ROURKE (1943):

As good and bad sisters in THE DARK MIRROR (1946):

With Alan and David Ladd in THE PROUD REBEL (1958), which I hope to write about here in the future:

We have all been blessed with so many wonderful film experiences provided by this marvelous actress!

Sending best wishes to her in France for a very happy birthday and a wonderful 100th year to come.

  2. Thank you, Laura, for the wonderful birthday tributes to these two lovely ladies. The photo of young Olivia as Alice caught my breath - enchanting! (I'm just back from London where I saw the charming manuscript Lewis Carroll wrote and illustrated by hand of "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" at the British Library!). Best, Jane

Jane, how wonderful you were in London!!! The literary (and musical!) treasures on view at the British Library are breathtaking.
