TCM Star of the Month: Dana Andrews

Classic film favorite Dana Andrews is the July Star of the Month on Turner Classic Movies.

Andrews' films will be shown on Tuesday evenings beginning on July 5th.

This is Andrews' first time to be honored as Star of the Month, which is understandable when one considers that a majority of his best films were made for 20th Century-Fox; those films cost a premium for TCM to license.

TCM has put together a very nice overview of Andrews' career, including several of his films for 20th Century-Fox along with movies for RKO and other studios.

The complete schedule is below. Please click any hyperlinked title to read my extended review.

THE FROZEN DEAD (1966)

THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE (1968)

There are a number of films I would have loved to see included in this series, but understanding the licensing complications, this is a good lineup.

Andrews fans may want to supplement TCM's schedule with additional viewing. Two of my favorite Andrews films are CANYON PASSAGE (1946), a Universal Pictures film which gets better on every viewing, and DEEP WATERS (1948), an underrated slice of Americana from 20th Century-Fox.  CANYON PASSAGE is available on Blu-ray, DVD, or VHS, while DEEP WATERS is available on DVD from the Fox Cinema Archives.

Other recommended titles include CRASH DIVE (1943), WING AND A PRAYER (1944), FALLEN ANGEL (1945), THE IRON CURTAIN (1948), and THE FROGMEN (1951), all for 20th Century-Fox and all available on DVD.

Highly regarded Andrews films not on the schedule which I've not reviewed here include THE OX-BOW INCIDENT (1942), THE PURPLE HEART (1944), and A WALK IN THE SUN (1945).

Dana Andrews films are plentiful in my collection, simply because he made some excellent films and was such a compelling actor to watch.

I'm glad to share the news that CANYON PASSAGE has been restored and will be screened at the New York Film Festival which takes place in September-October 2022:

The article says that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg were consulted on the restoration.

Best wishes,
Laura
