There are a number of interesting titles on the schedule, including several films from Universal, Paramount, and 20th Century-Fox which I believe may either be TCM premieres or haven't been shown on the network in a very long time.
Some of the interesting titles on the August schedule include Fox's SUSANNAH OF THE MOUNTIES (1939) shown on Shirley Temple Day; Paramount's MARY BURNS, FUGITIVE (1935) and I MET HIM IN PARIS (1937), both showing on Melvyn Douglas Day; Universal's HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME (1937) and WHEN TOMORROW COMES (1939) for Irene Dunne Day; and Fox's MOTHER DIDN'T TELL ME (1950) for Dorothy McGuire Day. It's great to see some fresh titles turn up on the network!
Interesting newer documentaries airing in August are AVA GARDNER: THE GIPSY OF HOLLYWOOD (2017) and THE GREAT BUSTER: A CELEBRATION (2018), the latter directed by Peter Boganovich.
There's so much good stuff coming in August that it makes up for the dates on the schedule which are utterly uninteresting to me, such as the MacLaine and Hoffman days...

I'll have much more on Summer Under the Stars posted here around the end of August! In the meantime, Paul Newman continues as the May Star of the Month, with Jane Powell coming in June and Glenn Ford celebrated in July.

SUTS is probably one of my favorite days on this channel. I do like the list a lot with some new ones and returning favorites. I do wish that TCM would consider Jack Carson, Robert Donat, Walter Huston, or even Albert Finney in the future, particularly Finney who passed this year. I thought that he was a shoo-in! I do hope that you take a look at the days of Hoffman and Maclaine as even though that there careers started around the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood and are considered modern stars, I do feel that a majority of their work has hold up very well.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the days that I am looking forward to are Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando, Ava Gardner, June Allyson and BOGIE to name a few!!!! Enjoy August, Laura!!!
Leila Hyams, a superb selection.
ReplyDeleteStrangely, the closer we get to August the more likely I am to forget about Summer Under the Stars. Now you have me excited all over again.
ReplyDeleteBrian Donlevy and Paul Lukas Days make me happy. Still waiting for George Zucco Day!
TCM Backlot ran a contest to determine the 2 open dates on the Summer Under the Stars schedule. The contest was Joel McCrea vs Robert Ryan and Ruth Hussey vs Ruth Roman. The winners: Ruth Hussey on August 2 and Joel McCrea on August 21! Enjoy! Jane
ReplyDeleteThis is something that I look forward to every year. As you always find smaller movie's that I often have never seen which turn out to be these GREAT hidden gems.
