Disney Imagineer Joyce Carlson, the first woman to become a 50-year employee with Disney, has passed away at age 84.
Carlson started out doing office deliveries at Disney Studios in 1944, and remained with the company until her retirement in 2000 -- a 56-year tenure.
Carlson helped ink animated films, including CINDERELLA, PETER PAN, and SLEEPING BEAUTY, and also worked on Disney theme park attractions. One of her best-known co-creations is IT'S A SMALL WORLD.
Another pioneering woman animator, Mary Blair, is among the others who Imagineered the ride. Carlson and Blair were both named Disney Legends by the company, Blair in 1991 and Carlson in 2000.

That ridiculously simple, much parodied ride was unexpectedly one of my favorite things about Disneyland. I'm not even sure I can explain why, except maybe the combination of kitsch and pure joyful innocence, and the utterly hypnotic song, turned me into a 7-year-old for the duration of the ride.
