Classic film fans were startled today by the announcement that Robert Osborne, the much-loved host of Turner Classic Movies, is taking "a short break" from the network.
Mr. Osborne will have what is described by TCM as "minor surgery," followed by a vacation. He will return in three months.
Mr. Osborne has hosted all of TCM's primetime movies since the network was founded in 1994.
He will continue to appear in previously filmed introductions including "The Essentials" series on Saturday evenings, guest programmer nights, and this month's series "Race and Hollywood: Arab Images on Film."
TCM has lined up what looks like a great initial list of guest hosts, beginning tonight with Robert Wagner. Jane Powell will be the host the week of June 18th, and Tippi Hedren will be filling in the week of the 25th.
I'll be watching for the names of other guest hosts and share information here as it's available.
It goes without saying that I wish Mr. Osborne the very best for his recovery and time away from TCM. He'll be missed!
Hi, Laura -- It's encouraging to read Robert Osborne has signed a multi-year deal with TCM so a speedy recovery is anticipated. I thought he was much younger than 79, he deserves time off! He does his hosting with such enthusiasm and dignity. I join the legion of TCM fans who wish him the very best. (Glad you had such a happy "staycation"!) Jane
