Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Best wishes to all for a very happy St. Patrick's Day!

Turner Classic Movies is celebrating with a day of Irish-themed films including Dennis Morgan in MY WILD IRISH ROSE (1947), June Haver in THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY (1950), James Cagney in THE IRISH IN US (1935), and Tyrone Power in THE RISING OF THE MOON (1957).

Check the TCM schedule for the complete title list.

Other Irish-themed films not being shown on TCM this year, which are available on DVD: Deborah Kerr and Trevor Howard in I SEE A DARK STRANGER (1946); Tyrone Power and Anne Baxter in THE LUCK OF THE IRISH (1948), which even has a green tint!; John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in THE QUIET MAN (1952); a young Sean Connery in DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE (1959); Fred Astaire in FINIAN'S RAINBOW (1968); and Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in LEAP YEAR (2010).

Two "Irish" films which need DVD releases: Priscilla Lane and Dennis Morgan are adorable in THREE CHEERS FOR THE IRISH (1940), which I hope will come out from the Warner Archive before too long; and June Haver and Dick Haymes starred in the 20th Century-Fox film IRISH EYES ARE SMILING (1944).

Finally, a mention that this evening Hallmark Channel is airing a new TV-movie, CHASING LEPRECHAUNS (2012).

  1. I hope the Warner Archive releases both "3 Cheers for the Irish" which I haven't seen yet and also "The Irish in Us." Sounds like a fun day of viewing on TCM :)

  2. Laura, since this seems to be one of those St. Patrick's Days when they don't seem to be showing THE QUIET MAN or THE INFORMER or any of the usual St. Patrick's movies, I appreciated your rundown of appropriate movies for the day -- thanks for the great lineup!

By the way, Casey Koester of NOIR GIRL has a charming blog post about THE QUIET MAN at her blog, including the movie in its entirety:

If you're interested, we of Team Bartilucci posted an updated version of our 2011 TotED post about THE QUIET MAN:

Hope your St. Patrick's Day was happy and festive! Erin Go Bragh! :-)

  3. Maybe next year the Archive will put out some St. Patrick's Day releases, Robby! We can hope. :)

Dorian, I'm glad you enjoyed the roundup, and thanks very much for calling everyone's attention to two posts on one of my favorite movies. Whenever I see the quiet man, I feel a sense of "going home" -- not to Ireland, but simply being among that wonderful group of actors once more. I'll be visiting those posts later in the weekend for sure!

    Best wishes,
    Laura
