Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...
...Many thanks to author Carl Rollyson for sending word that his book HOLLYWOOD ENIGMA: DANA ANDREWS will be out this fall. I'll be sure to post a reminder here closer to the release date!
...Over at 50 Westerns From the 50s, Toby asked "What's the quintessential Universal '50s Western?"
...An exhibit on the credits sequences for James Bond movies opened yesterday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. My eldest daughter was there with friends and was befuddled, as it turned out the "exhibit" was simply a room with a bunch of screens running the credits sequences! She was expecting to see original artwork and things along those lines. The LACMA website should clarify exactly what the 007 exhibit is for unsuspecting museum-goers. Fortunately there were more interesting things for her to see elsewhere at LACMA, including Metropolis II.
...I'm intrigued by HYDE PARK ON HUDSON (2012), with Bill Murray playing FDR at the time he hosted the visit of King George VI (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman). Laura Linney costars. When I saw the actor playing King George had the surname West I looked him up, and sure enough, Samuel West is the son of Timothy West, who played King Edward VII in the memorable TV series EDWARD THE KING (1975); his mother is actress Prunella Scales. Here's the trailer for HYDE PARK ON HUDSON.
...At Twenty Four Frames, John Greco interviews stuntwoman Martha Crawford Cantarini, the author of FALL GIRL, in Part 1 and Part 2.
...Robby has fantastic location photos for the James Garner-Doris Day movie MOVE OVER, DARLING (1963) at Dear Old Hollywood. I especially enjoyed his photos of Point Mugu Rock since my husband grew up in Oxnard.
...The Movie Projector will be hosting a William Wyler Blogathon from June 24th through June 29th. The impressive schedule, listing participating bloggers and the films they'll be covering, can be found here.
...Leonard Maltin reviews his colleague Richard Jewell's new book on RKO, which led off last week's link roundup.
...Jacqueline has a lovely tribute to the friendship of Errol Flynn and Alexis Smith at Another Old Movie Blog.
...If it's June, it must be time to think about Christmas tree ornaments: The 2012 Hallmark Dreambook is available online.
...Last year I was especially impressed with the "extremely good color photography" when I saw RUN FOR THE SUN (1956), a variation on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (1932) starring Richard Widmark and Jane Greer. Glenn Erickson was also very taken with the film's visual look, as well as the movie itself; he praises the new MGM DVD-R in a review at DVD Savant.
...Here's an interview with designer Laura Montalban, daughter of Ricardo Montalban and Georgiana Young; she was also the niece of Loretta Young. She calls her father "an adorable guy." For sure!
...New Cookbook: MR. SUNDAY'S SATURDAY NIGHT CHICKEN by Lorraine Wallace, wife of FOX NEWS SUNDAY anchor Chris Wallace. Mrs. Wallace's first book, MR. SUNDAY'S SOUPS, was well received.
...If you missed the spectacular Buckingham Palace fireworks celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, it's three and a half minutes or so that's really worth seeing.
...Notable Passings: Character actor Frank Cady, best known for the '60s TV series PETTICOAT JUNCTION and GREEN ACRES, has passed on at the age of 96...Costume designer Nolan Miller, most famous for TV's DYNASTY, died at 79...Art director and Disneyland designer Stan Jolley, the son of character actor I. Stanford Jolley, passed away at age 86.
Have a great week!
Looking forward to the Dana Andrews bio!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the mention (cute poster). And I loved John Greco's interview with stuntwoman Martha Crawford Cantarini.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the bio on Dana Andrews.
Had no idea about the Dana Andrews bio in the works. Can't wait to read that when it comes out!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the mention :)

Robby
Thank you all so much for the comments! The Dana Andrews book should be great. :) For those who can't wait for it, there's another one I'd love to read at some point, DANA ANDREWS: THE FACE OF NOIR by James McKay.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Laura
