Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...

...I had missed hearing about a recently published book from Joseph McBride, GEORGE CUKOR'S PEOPLE: ACTING FOR A MASTER DIRECTOR; I just learned about it a few days ago thanks to my friend Deb on Twitter. It was published in January by Columbia University Press. I have many of McBride's books, going back to a book he wrote on JOHN FORD with Michael Wilmington in the '70s. It was a thrill to have him sign my Ford book, one of the earliest film books in my collection, when he came to UCLA in 2018 for a film series celebrating his book on Ernst Lubitsch. I'm looking forward to his latest!

...The latest reviews from CineSavant Glenn Erickson at Trailers From Hell: EXECUTIVE SUITE (1954), from the Warner Archive Collection, and THE BIG HEAT (1953) from the Criterion Collection.

...Coming this November: HOW WALT DISNEY CHANGED ANIMATION FOREVER by Andrew Stanley Kiste, from White Owl Books. (Via Keith Buczak, who does a great job staying on top of the latest books on Disney.)

...Colin's latest review at Riding the High Country is a favorite Dick Powell film, CRY DANGER (1951)...and at 50 Westerns From the 50s, Toby has reviewed Gary Cooper in SPRINGFIELD RIFLE (1952), recently released on Blu-ray by the Warner Archive Collection.

...As of last week, the streaming service Max has changed back to its original name, HBO Max.

...Jon Burlingame has a great, very informative article at Variety on the "New" Hollywood String Quartet. My late father introduced me to the original group's recordings.

...Coming to Blu-ray from Film Masters: Hedy Lamarr and George Sanders in THE STRANGE WOMAN (1946). Film Masters will also be putting out Van Heflin in PATTERNS (1956).

...Elisabeth Grace Foley of The Second Sentence has a lovely post on classic Disney live-action films. She discusses several which are close to my heart.

...I recently learned of a series of books on JACK BENNY'S LOST RADIO BROADCASTS which contain the scripts for his early shows, for which no recordings exist. The volumes are edited by Kathryn Fuller-Seeley.

...A reminder that Lone Pine Film Festival tickets go on sale this week! As always, I'll have more info on this year's festival here in the future. It will be held in Lone Pine October 9th through 12th.

...Jeff Arnold's West has a great new post up on Western stuntwoman Sylvia Durando, whose work included standing in for Nancy Gates in COMANCHE STATION (1960). As an added bonus there's a fascinating still from a scene cut from COMANCHE STATION at the end of the post. I especially enjoyed learning more about Sylvia as I was honored to meet her at the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2016.
