Rich Lowry on Bible Education
Rich Lowry of National Review writes on a topic which has been popping up in the media of late, whether Bible literacy should be taught in public schools.
Although I'm generally in favor of the idea, one thing gives me pause, in that so much depends on what an individual teacher does with the material. My lone public schooler, a H.S. senior, is currently in an AP Civics class where the far left-wing teacher is seeking to indoctrinate the students with Michael Moore movies and other non-curricular materials. (The stories I could tell...) A teacher of his ilk teaching a Bible literacy class would be a disaster.

since I'm jewish, would I be learning about the bible too? Or would there be a seperate class for me to take?
Taking your question at face value: This is a Bible-as-literature course for anyone interested in it at that level; it's not a class for believers. Both Old and New Testament are taught. The idea is that because the Bible is quoted and referred to so extensively throughout great literature and history, it's important to understand the Bible itself -- otherwise an out-of-context Biblical quote in Shakespeare, for example, loses its meaning.
The course is taught as an elective, so anyone who is uncomfortable with the idea is free to skip it.

I appreciate your demeanor when responding to people on your blog. You give great "customer service" by taking care not to offend folks.
That said, it is not my blog and they are not my guests, so I'll be a little more blunt. This person is not Jewish or else they would already know what you so beautifully told them. (As far as I know, "anonymous" isn't even a Jewish name.) You also could have added that such courses generally don't even delve into the New Testament, but study only the Jewish part of the Bible. Anyway, we both know anonymous is just looking for a fight over an imagined slight (that's what they do); you are smarter than I and didn't give in to the dark side.
