Adolph Green is said to have been so impressed with the telephone answering service provided by Mary Printz that it led him to write the show, along with his partner Betty Comden and composer Jule Styne. Judy Holliday played the lead in both the stage and film versions.
This New York Times story is a couple of months old, but it's a very interesting slice of theatrical history which is worth reading.
