Happy 50th Anniversary to the Matterhorn!

Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds opened June 14, 1959.

The Matterhorn is in my Top 5 favorite Disneyland rides. The Matterhorn is unique to Disneyland and has not been copied at any other Disney theme park.

What are your other four?! That essay had so many that it would be great to know the culled-down list!!

BTW, do you still expect to be away on June 29-July 1?

Best-
Anne

It's difficult to choose, but my Top 5 includes Big Thunder Mountain, Alice in Wonderland (my favorite "dark" ride), and Casey Jr. Circus Train (which has great views of Storybookland Canal). The fifth I'm not sure of but it might be the Monorail, with its great views of Fantasyland.

We should be making a definite decision on those dates in the next week or so...if we don't go, the chance to meet up with your family would be wonderful! Maybe we could join them for ice cream or something like that. :)

Hope you're feeling 100% now!

Best wishes,
Laura

My top five may be odd, they would have to include
The RR going around the Magic Kingdom at WDW- it was also my first "ride" as a kid at WDW and I still love it.
The Pirates of the Caribbean
The Peter Pan Ride at WDW
The Spaceship Earth at Epcot
Maelstrom at Norway at the World Showcase.
Two of my other real faves are gone: Wedway people mover (when it had the clamshell cars in FL and was sponsered by American Airlines or some airline) and Carousel of Progress.
But perhaps the thing I miss the most was a little building on Main Street. On one side was genuine Penny Arcade and then next door was a old fashioned Movie Theater which played some early Mickey Mouse Cartoons. I remember spending two hours there- and the velvety seats- I was transported to another time and place. That was the real Disney touch- the journey to another time and place.

I was so sad that the one time I've made it out to Disneyland CA, the Matterhorn was closed for a referb. But, the Alice in Wonderland ride is excellent and is probably one of the best dark rides.

Expedition Everest in WDW's Animal Kingdom I suppose is the closest they've come to duplicating the Matterhorn (at least in spirt anyways!) I was just on it Friday, we sat in the front seat and it was a great ride!

Love your WDW list, J.C.! I'd have to work on a whole new ride list for that park. :)

You might like to know there is still a movie theater on Main Street in Disneyland, in fact I just photographed it today! We were fortunate to see Carousel of Progress at WDW on our first trip a few years ago. I recently got a CD which has tons of great material on the Carousel of Progress and the World's Fair.

It's kind of interesting that of the 5 favorite Disneyland rides I listed, only one -- Big Thunder -- is also at WDW as a "ride," although of course they also have a Monorail; it's just that it's not a "park ride" there, but strictly "transportation"!

Ed, I saw your Twitter updates about visiting WDW -- lucky you, it sounded like you must have been at the Beach Club since you mentioned a sandy-bottomed pool! I have loved every WDW resort I've been to but the Beach Club I think is extra-special. I was able to ride Expedition Everest in early '08 and to my delight absolutely loved it. I had been worried it would be a little intense but it was just perfect. (We were almost in the back of the train, though!) It was fun to compare the Indy coaster in Paris which is somewhat similar in theming. Everest is much more elaborate and a better ride, but Indy was fun. It's interesting that for a few years Indy was a completely *backwards* coaster (?!) but they started running it facing forwards again around 2004-5.

Hope you will be able to make another CA trip and go on the Matterhorn. It's *the* classic "Disneyland" ride. I'll be posting some new photos of it tonight or tomorrow!

Best wishes,
Laura
