New on DVD: A Little Princess (1986)

Here's another excellent '80s TV-movie which just came to DVD last month: A LITTLE PRINCESS, a British production which originally aired in the U.S. on the public TV series WONDERWORKS.

Unlike the Shirley Temple version or the controversial 1995 adaptation, this 1986 version is the definitive filming of the Frances Hodgson Burnett classic. It stars Amelia Shankley as Sara Crewe, with Nigel Havers as Carrisford, the man who searches for Sara after her father's death. Maureen Lipman plays mean Miss Minchin.

This involving movie should appeal to the whole family; when it originally aired, my husband enjoyed it as much as I did.

This DVD is a British cut which differs from the version which aired in the U.S. A helpful Amazon reviewer explains.

The U.S. version was released on VHS; according to the DVD reviewer, a shorter U.S. version was also released on video, so anyone interested in acquiring the original U.S. version should research their video purchase before buying.
