New on DVD: The Amazing Mrs. Holliday (1943)
Thanks to ClassicFlix for the news that Deanna Durbin's THE AMAZING MRS. HOLLIDAY (1943) is now available on DVD!
It's been released on DVD-R in the Universal Vault Series, sold via Amazon.
THE AMAZING MRS. HOLLIDAY is among my favorite half-dozen or so Durbin films. It's a surprisingly serious story wherein Deanna, the daughter of missionaries, saves several refugee children from WWII China and takes them to the United States. I think it's one of her best performances.
The film also has a remarkably deep supporting cast; along with Edmond O'Brien, Barry Fitzgerald and Harry Davenport, there's a seemingly endless list of great character actors in the movie, including Arthur Treacher, Frieda Inescort, Grant Mitchell, Elisabeth Risdon, Esther Dale, Philip Ahn, Gus Schilling, Jonathan Hale, Irving Bacon, and George Chandler -- not to mention a group of talented child actors.
I'll be buying this title in the near future, can't wait to own it!
Another new Universal Vault release looks interesting, based on the cast: ONE DESIRE (1955) stars Rock Hudson, Anne Baxter, Julie Adams, and Natalie Wood.
1 Comments:
ONE DESIRE is a very good melodrama, directed by talented Jerry Hopper. Julie Adams uncharacteristically got to play a malevolent neurotic.
Either I or someone else may have called attention here earlier to the fact that Deanna Durbin herself said most of THE AMAZING MRS. HOLLIDAY was directed by Jean Renoir, ultimately replaced and uncredited and it's very evident it's not the usual Durbin movie. I say this as one who enjoys her more usual movies too.
