Around the Blogosphere This Week
Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...
...Interesting theater news here in Orange County: Leslie Caron will star in the play SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS at the Laguna Playhouse from November 26th to December 29th. Tickets go on sale September 27th. (December 2013 Update: The opening has been pushed back to April 2014; it will run April 26th through May 25th.)
...Kim of GlamAmor did a very interesting post in 2011 on the fashion style of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934). I especially enjoyed this point about the work of the film's fashion designer, Robert Kalloch: "Kalloch also does an incredible job of creating subtle variations in the actors' outfits during their travels through use of layers. As a result, there are many different looks in the film and the audience always feels like they're looking at something new."
...I also discovered that Judy recently wrote about IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT at Movie Classics!
...DR. WHO fans received a jolt yesterday with the news that Matt Smith is leaving his stint as the latest incarnation of the Doctor earlier than expected.
...Over at Once Upon a Screen, my friend Aurora has reviewed the Blu-ray set Best of Warner Bros. 50-Film Collection. This set was released at the same time as the 100-Film Collection of standard DVDs which I reviewed yesterday.
...Once Upon a Screen and Classic Movie Hub are cohosting a blogathon in mid-July, the Dynamic Duos Blogathon. Visit either blog for details. The blogathon takes place on July 13th and 14th.
...Dave Kehr of the New York Times takes an updated look at the wildly inconsistent Fox Cinema Archives program. While many FCA prints continue to disappoint -- Dave says the MEET ME AFTER THE SHOW (1951) print is "almost unwatchable" -- the new release of UNFAITHFULLY YOURS may be a better print than the older Criterion edition.
...A few days ago I recorded Dorothy Mackaill and Lewis Stone in THE OFFICE WIFE (1930). Based on Cliff's preview at Immortal Ephemera, it should be a fun film.
...On Memorial Day Jessica paid tribute to The Forgotten Hollywood War Hero: Wayne Morris at Comet Over Hollywood.
...I drive past Miceli's Restaurant in Hollywood when I go to the Egyptian Theatre and have thought about trying it sometime! Robby posted a nice story on the restaurant at Dear Old Hollywood.
...Notable Passing: Actress Jean Stapleton has died at the age of 90. She was in one of our family's favorite movies, YOU'VE GOT MAIL (1998). In the '80s my husband and I saw a fun stage production of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE in which Stapleton and Marion Ross were the dotty aunts, with Gary Sandy (WKRP) as Mortimer and Jonathan Frid (DARK SHADOWS) as the creepy Jonathan.
...Notable Passing: Angels team doctor Dr. Lewis Yocum, an important figure in Southern California sports medicine, has died at 65.
...Attention Southern Californians: I reviewed Jacques Tourneur's CANYON PASSAGE (1946), starring Dana Andrews and Susan Hayward, on Memorial Day. Thanks to Blake Lucas for the tip that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is screening the film in 35mm on Tuesday, June 4th, at 1:00 p.m.
...My sincere thanks to Pretty Clever Films for recently spotlighting Laura's Miscellaneous Musings as Blog of the Day. I very much appreciated the link and the kind words!
Have a great week!

You lucky people in and around Orange County... What I wouldn't give to see Leslie Caron - in ANYTHING!
About Jean Stapleton - she had a small role in one of my favorite film musicals Damn Yankees (1958) to which she was transferred from the original Broadway cast, as were most of the rest of the cast.
She used the same voice and manner of speaking that would become familiar to watchers of All In The Family years later. Her normal speaking voice was not like that at all.
RIP Jean Stapleton.
Jean Stapleton also originated the important role of Sue in the stage musical BELLS ARE RINGING and played it in the wonderful movie version directed by Vincente Minnelli(1960, one of my own favorite movies.
I always remember Jean Stapleton in an 1981 TV movie, Isobel's Choice in which she costarred with Richard Kiley. How I wish I could see it again.
