Quick Preview of TCM in February: 31 Days of Oscar

The tentative schedule for next February has now been posted online by Turner Classic Movies.

As always, February means the 31 Days of Oscar Festival on TCM. There are a great many outstanding films airing on the channel that month, although the Oscar focus necessarily means that the schedule has few of the lesser-known films which are so much fun to explore as well.

February will kick off with a 75th anniversary tribute to the films of Hollywood's "Golden Year," 1939, with titles including THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), STAGECOACH (1939), WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939), DARK VICTORY (1939), and of course, GONE WITH THE WIND (1939).

Many other films airing in February are grouped by year, such as a wonderful night featuring THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946), THE RAZOR'S EDGE (1946), and NOTORIOUS (1946).

Not all of the films are organized in that fashion, so it will be interesting to see what this year's programming theme is, as that's always a fun aspect to the February schedule. Some of the films seem to be grouped around concepts such as literary classics or WWII.

I'm particularly delighted to see that TCM will be showing Deanna Durbin in THREE SMART GIRLS (1936) in February. It's very exciting whenever another of her Universal titles makes its way to TCM.

I'll have a detailed look at the February schedule posted around the end of January 2014.

Coming soon on TCM: Fred Astaire is the Star of the Month in December, and Joan Crawford will be January's Star of the Month.
