TCM Star of the Month: Charles Boyer
The January Star of the Month on Turner Classic Movies will be Charles Boyer.
This is the first time TCM has honored Boyer as Star of the Month. Over two dozen Boyer films will screen on TCM on Thursday evenings.
The series begins on January 4th with one of Boyer's best-known films, LOVE AFFAIR (1939), costarring Irene Dunne.
That's followed by the engrossing ALL THIS, AND HEAVEN TOO (1940), in which he plays an unhappily married father who falls in love with the governess (Bette Davis).
The evening also includes LILIOM (1934), directed by Fritz Lang; CONQUEST (1937) with Greta Garbo; ALGIERS (1938) with Hedy Lamarr; and BREAK OF HEARTS (1935) with Katharine Hepburn. The lineup ends with RED HEADED WOMAN (1932) in which he played a small role.
On January 11th the classic suspense drama GASLIGHT (1944) begins the evening, costarring Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten.
The really wonderful romantic melodrama HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941) follows; don't miss it! It costars Olivia de Havilland (seen at right).
Also on the 11th: BACK STREET (1941) with Margaret Sullavan; the all-star film TALES OF MANHATTAN (1942); the classic romantic drama THE CONSTANT NYMPH (1943) with Joan Fontaine; and a comedy with Irene Dunne which I liked very much, TOGETHER AGAIN (1944).
On January 18th there's another "don't miss" title, Ernst Lubitsch's CLUNY BROWN (1946), in which he encourages Jennifer Jones's maid in her aspirations to be a plumber.
Also that night: THE EARRINGS OF MADAME DE... (1953) with Danielle Darrieux; UNE PARISIENNE (1957) with Brigitte Bardot; THE HAPPY TIME (1952) with Marsha Hunt and Louis Jourdan; Vincente Minnelli's THE COBWEB (1955) with a great cast including Richard Widmark and Lauren Bacall; and CONFIDENTIAL AGENT (1945), again with Bacall.
The series concludes on January 25th with FANNY (1961), starring Leslie Caron; THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1962) with Glenn Ford; LOVE IS A BALL (1963) with Ford and Hope Lange; THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1969) with Katharine Hepburn; LOST HORIZON (1972); and A MATTER OF TIME (1976) with Ingrid Bergman.
