More TCM News: New Co-Hosts and Robert Osborne Award
Earlier this week there was big news from Turner Classic Movies, the merging of the FilmStruck and Warner Archive streaming services.
FilmStruck will now be streaming classic films from the Warner Bros. library in addition to foreign, indie, and cult films; some films will now be introduced by TCM's Ben Mankiewicz.
It's been a busy news week for TCM with two additional important announcements.
Today TCM announced, via the Hollywood Reporter, that Alicia Malone and Dave Karger have been added to TCM as permanent hosts.
Malone, who will also continue to introduce movies at FilmStruck, and Karger will "rotate" their appearances, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Ben Mankiewicz will continue to host in prime time Thursday through Sunday and also continue to serve as the official host of the TCM Classic Film Festival.
Eddie Muller also continues as the host of the Noir Alley franchise, which will be adding a Saturday night time slot this month. The same film will then rerun on Sunday morning.
As I mentioned here a month ago, Tiffany Vasquez was let go from her Saturday daytime hosting role on the network. She will continue to be associated with TCM for "special projects."
There was also news regarding the TCM Classic Film Festival, the creation of the Robert Osborne Award. The award will be given each year to "an individual whose work has helped keep the cultural heritage of classic films alive and thriving for generations to come."
The inaugural award will be presented to Martin Scorsese on the opening night of the festival.
I enjoyed seeing Scorsese introduce a nitrate print of THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1934) at last year's festival.
One of his latest projects is a series of Paramount Pictures restorations of Republic Pictures films, being shown at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
I'll continue to share TCM news here as it happens, and as 31 Days of Oscar draws to a close on March 3rd, be looking for TCM's March highlights to post here this weekend!

Thank you, Laura, for this interesting TCM update. I still miss Robert Osborne introducing the movies on TCM very much. Thankfully, I still have recorded several of his intro's to some classic movies I love, but I would really love it, if they took a week or weekend and played movies with him doing all the introductions. That would be so nice.
Blessings on your day! Thank you for sharing this news! Net
Hi Net!
At last year's TCM Festival it was mentioned at the opening press conference that they had never re-used intros but they would be considering whether there would be a way going forward to share Osborne's intros again. I think it would be nice if there were a weekly "From the Archives With Robert Osborne" type slot. Perhaps it will happen one day!
Best wishes,
Laura
