TCM Star of the Month: Jane Powell
MGM's delightful singing star Jane Powell is the June Star of the Month on Turner Classic Movies!
18 films celebrating Powell's career will be shown on Wednesday evenings.
Jane Powell's films were part of the reason I fell in love with classic films in general and MGM musicals in particular, with SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (1954) being one of my all-time favorite films. (A review of the Warner Archive Blu-ray will hopefully be coming sometime this summer!) In addition to her films, I've been fortunate to see Jane on stage in SOUTH PACIFIC (1977) and speaking to a class at USC (1978, with the autograph I received that night shown here).
Though I've seen most of Powell's films, I still need to catch up with THE FEMALE ANIMAL (1956) and ENCHANTED ISLAND (1958).
Here's an overview of the lineup; click any hyperlinked title for my related review. Times for each time zone may be found on TCM's online schedule. Wednesday evenings are guaranteed to provide sunny entertainment all month long!

I saw JANE POWELL in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS and THE GIRL MOST LIKELY. I also remember her from an episode of MURDER, SHE WROTE where she played a nun-a friend of JESSICA(ANGELA LANSBURY). The episode also had EILEEN BRENNAN, ED NELSON & CLU GULAGER. I read that Jane at one time was a temporary replacement for EILEEN FULTON as LISA on the soap AS THE WORLD TURNS. Jane Powell turned 90 earlier this year! Classic TV Fan
Jane Powell is a real favorite who was in many entertaining films and TV shows -- and a very nice lady as well. :)
Best wishes,
Laura
