Pride and Prejudice (1940): A Photo Gallery

Last summer I reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed the MGM version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940).  It was the first time I'd seen the film in a number of years.

I've put together a photo gallery of 20 stills from the film which I thought might be enjoyed by those who love the film as I do...and perhaps they will encourage viewers who haven't yet had the pleasure to try it out!

These scene shots are in no particular order, followed by a selection of publicity stills.

Karen Morley and Greer Garson as Charlotte Lucas and Elizabeth Bennet:

Garson and Frieda Inescort, playing Miss Bingley:

Garson with Marsha Hunt as her awkward sister Mary:

Garson and Hunt with Maureen O'Sullivan (center) as Jane Bennet:

Garson with Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy:

Edmund Gwenn as Mr. Bennet, with Garson as his Lizzie:

Bruce Lester as Mr. Bingley, with Olivier, Garson, and Morley:

Garson and Olivier:

Garson with Mary Boland as Mrs. Bennet, May Beatty as Mrs. Philips, and Melville Cooper as the tedious Mr. Collins:

Garson with Edna May Oliver, who is splendid as Lady Catherine de Bourgh:

Garson, Gwenn, and Hunt with Heather Angel (second from left) as Kitty Bennet:

Garson, Angel, and Hunt:

Garson and Olivier:

The five Bennet sisters, including Ann Rutherford (second from left) as Lydia Bennet:

Marsha Hunt:

Karen Morley:

Rutherford with Heather Angel on the left:

And finally, one more shot of the sublime Greer Garson.

Wonderful photos. Wonderful film. The whole cast is perfect. Just wish it had been in color.

I agree, Vienna! Just perfection -- and as pretty as it is in B&W, I think Technicolor would have been wonderful!

Best wishes,
Laura
