Around the Blogosphere This Week
Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...
...The Cinecon Festival has announced that this year's venue will be the Writers Guild of America Theatre on S. Doheny Drive in Beverly Hills. I found it interesting that the festival is not returning to the Egyptian Theatre now that it's reopened. As usual, Cinecon will take place Labor Day Weekend, from August 29th through September 2nd. Early Bird passes are now available, but no titles have yet been announced.
...Turner Classic Movies host Jacqueline Stewart, who has also headed up the Academy Museum for the past two years, is leaving the museum and returning to her previous academic position at the University of Chicago. She will be replaced by Amy Homma. The Academy also announced the retirement of Randy Haberkamp, whose roles included overseeing the Academy archive; he's a familiar face as a guest at the TCM Classic Film Festival. He will be replaced by Matt Severson, current director of the Academy's Margaret Herrick Library.
...Kino Lorber will be releasing a special edition of NO WAY OUT (1987), starring Kevin Costner, on July 30th. And coming soon is John Wayne in SANDS OF IWO JIMA (1949), one of a number of films previously released by the now-defunct Olive Films which Kino Lorber is happily resurrecting.
...The return of VHS? In a manner of speaking...
...John McElwee has a fun article musing on Universal Pictures of the '50s at his site Greenbriar Picture Shows.
...Last week I mentioned the announcement of a third Benoit Blanc mystery starring Daniel Craig, WAKE UP DEAD MAN (2024). Since then cast members have been announced, including Glenn Close and Jeremy Renner, who will be making his first film since his near-fatal January 2023 snowplow accident.
...Classic film reviews I've recently enjoyed include Colin on DAISY KENYON (1947) and FATE IS THE HUNTER (1964) at his blog Riding the High Country...Jessica wrote about Ann Miller in CAROLINA BLUES (1944) at her blog Comet Over Hollywood...J.B. Kaufman's "Movie of the Month" is WOMAN IN THE DARK (1934) with Fay Wray...CineSavant Glenn Erickson has reviewed Kino Lorber's new Sci-Fi Chillers set for Trailers From Hell...Classic Movie Ramblings reviews Victor Mature, Jane Russell, and Vincent Price in THE LAS VEGAS STORY (1952)...and Toby has reviewed the new Warner Archive Collection release THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (1932) at The Hannibal 8.
...I've enjoyed the Western film blog Jeff Arnold's West for a great many years, and I know many of my readers have as well. I was extremely sorry to learn Jeff is dealing with inoperable cancer; he announced his final post a few days ago. My prayers are with him. (P.S. Here is an update on the future of Jeff's site.)
...Notable Passings: I was very much saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Australian film historian Lee Gambin at the age of 44. Gambin recorded countless commentary tracks for Kino Lorber, Powerhouse Indicator, and other labels; a quick review of my inventory shows his work appeared on three dozen discs in my collection. An obituary ran in the Daily Mail...Actress Elizabeth MacRae, a familiar face from GOMER PYLE: USMC (1966-69) and GENERAL HOSPITAL (1969-73), has died at 88...Producer Al Ruddy (THE GODFATHER) has passed on at 94.

Was sorry to read about Jeff Arnold. I've come across some of his writing (and yours, too, Laura) when looking at external reviews for a movie on IMDb. Looks as if a couple people who frequent his site have stepped up to keep it going.
Thank you so much for the updated info about Jeff's site, John. I'm glad it will have caretakers, so to speak. I've added a link to my post.
Best wishes,
Laura
