TCM in July: Highlights

Happy July!

My favorite month of the year has arrived, and the viewing will be great on Turner Classic Movies.

The July Star of the Month will be Eva Marie Saint, who celebrates her centennial birthday on Independence Day.

TCM will be showing 15 Saint films plus one interview special spread across Thursday evenings this month. The films will include ON THE WATERFRONT (1954) and NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959).

The July Noir Alley films are ARMORED CAR ROBBERY (1950), THE WOMAN ON PIER 13 (1950), RED LIGHT (1949), and THE HOUSEMAID (1960). ARMORED CAR ROBBERY is one of my all-time favorite films, a short and sweet 67-minute movie starring Charles McGraw, and I can't recommend it enough.

The TCM Spotlight on Monday nights is "The Hays Gaze," constrasting pre- and post-Code enforcement movies.

A Special Theme on Fridays this month is "Films of the 1970s," and there's also a three-night tribute to the late Roger Corman. The Corman tribute takes place on the evenings of July 3rd, 10th, and 17th.

Here's a closer look at just a few of the fun things airing on TCM in July. Please click any hyperlinked title to read an extended review:

...The first evening of the Hays Code comparison films on July 1st includes the classic pre-Code BABY FACE (1933) starring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, and a young John Wayne.

...I love the "Summer Musicals" theme on July 3rd, including MGM's SUMMER HOLIDAY (1948), starring Mickey Rooney and Gloria DeHaven, and SUMMER STOCK (1950), with DeHaven in support of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

...Independence Day will feature a typical TCM lineup including 1776 (1972), THE MUSIC MAN (1962), and YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (`942). Later that night TCM celebrates Eva Marie Saint's centennial with her first evening of Star of the Month films.

...The lineup on July 5th includes WEEK-END AT THE WALDORF (1945) featuring a great cast including Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, Lana Turner, and Van Johnson.

...The late evening lineup on July 6th includes Richard Dix in a fun "B" film, BLIND ALIBI (1938).

...I'm perhaps in the minority, but I'm a fan of Vincente Minnelli's dazzlingly colorful fantasy YOLANDA AND THE THIEF (1945), starring Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer. It will be shown July 7th.

...On July 8th will feature the TCM premiere of BLANCHE FURY (1948), starring Stewart Granger and Valerie Hobson.

...I just recently saw A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964) for the first time...I haven't even written about it yet! I didn't love it yet found it interesting...Clint is always fun to watch. It's being shown on July 9th along with three additional Eastwoood films.

...An evening of Eva Marie Saint films on July 11th includes the TCM premiere of THAT CERTAIN FEELING (1956), costarring Bob Hope and George Sanders.

...The theme is royalty on July 12th, including NAUGHTY MARIETTA (1935) and HER HIGHNESS AND THE BELLBOY (1945). NAUGHTY MARIETTA stars Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, while HER HIGHNESS AND THE BELLBOY stars Robert Walker, Hedy Lamarr, and June Allyson.

...Two of Burt Lancaster's very best films, both directed by Robert Siodmak, will be shown as a double bill on the evening of July 14th: THE KILLERS (1946) and CRISS CROSS (1949). I've seen both these movies numerous times, and I always find them gripping.

...The Hays Code comparison films on July 15th include the classic Lubitsch comedy TROUBLE IN PARADISE (1932) and several more wonderful films. It's a great night to watch the entire lineup!

...A Ginger Rogers birthday tribute on July 16th is followed by an evening of films set on Pacific islands, including a rare TCM showing of Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC (1958).

...There's a great day of Westerns on July 17th including fun titles like DESERT PURSUIT (1952) with Wayne Morris and Virginia Grey and TRIPLE JUSTICE (1940) with George O"Brien and Virginia Vale.

...A day of romantic comedies on July 19th includes Ginger Rogers in RAFTER ROMANCE (1933) and Rod Taylor and Jane Fonda in SUNDAY IN NEW YORK (1963).

...The Saturday lineup on July 20th includes the very enjoyable MGM "B" mystery GRAND CENTRAL MURDER (1942) starring Van Heflin and Virginia Grey.

...The July 22nd theme is 1960s Westerns, including the TCM premiere of THE PLUNDERERS (1960) starring Jeff Chandler, Dolores Hart, John Saxon, and Marsha Hunt.

...A tribute to Stanley Kubrick on July 24th includes the classic heist film THE KILLING (1956).  A fabulous cast and unique timeline make it a must.

...TCM hosts an eight-film birthday tribute to Walter Brennan on July 25th. Titles include the very good NOBODY LIVES FOREVER (1946) starring John Garfield and Geraldine Fitzgerald.

...Two great films air on the evening of July 27th. First, as part of an evening of films set in Scotland, the all-time great Powell-Pressburger film I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING! (1945). Then, as part of a double bill of "train movies," the fabulous SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932), starring Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong.

...The excellent LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (1962) will be shown July 28th. Olivia de Havilland leads a terrific cast in this very unusual story of young love.

...The Hays Code comparison films on July 29th feature one of my all-time favorite pre-Codes, William Wellman's MIDNIGHT MARY (1933). Loretta Young, Franchot Tone, Ricardo Cortez, and Una Merkel star.

...TCM pays tribute to Herbert Marshall on July 30th with an eight-film tribute including my favorite Hitchcock film, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940). Joel McCrea, Laraine Day, and George Sanders also star.

...The month concludes on July 31st with a lineup of films featuring jazz scores, including BLUES IN THE NIGHT (1941) starring Priscilla Lane, Jack Carson, Richard Whorf, Lloyd Nolan, and Betty Field.

As a fan of Robert Ryan, I have mixed feelings about screening ‘The Woman on Pier 13’. My understanding is that Ryan did not want to make the film, but did so because it was a pet project of RKO owner Howard Hughes. But the man was a professional. I always find something in his performances to savor. Despite the mixed feelings, I’m happy to have the opportunity to see this one.

Wow. What a line-up, you lucky folks in America.
I share your love of Armored car Robbery, Laura. I’ve watched it several times and appreciate it each time.
