Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...

...There are lots of great Paramount films coming from Olive next year, including NO MAN OF HER OWN (1950) with Barbara Stanwyck, SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR (1952) with Ray Milland, Joan Fontaine, and Teresa Wright, CAPTAIN CAREY, U.S.A. (1950) with Alan Ladd and Wanda Hendrix, and THE LAWLESS (1950) with Macdonald Carey and Gail Russell. (There's more on that last title at Dear Old Hollywood.)

...Page has a great post on actress Simone Simon at My Love of Old Hollywood. It's filled with lots of wonderful photos.

...The 1978 miniseries PEARL will be coming out on DVD via the Warner Archive this week. The release date is November 22nd. This Pearl Harbor drama stars Robert Wagner, Lesley Ann Warren, Angie Dickinson, and Dennis Weaver, along with many more familiar names and faces.

...Slashfilm reports that Fandango and Regal Cinemas are teaming on mobile ticketing, with movie ticket barcodes sent to cell phones after tickets are purchased online.

...Missy passed on the interesting info that there are now clip-on telephoto lenses for iPhones!

...Reviews, reviews, and more reviews: Kevin's Movie Corner shares memories of a lifetime enjoying THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938)...Jacqueline takes a look at Alexis Smith and Dirk Bogarde in THE SLEEPING TIGER (1954) at Another Old Movie Blog; be sure to hang around and read the interesting discussion in the comments...at Immportal Ephemera, Cliff had an excellent review of Tyrone Power in the nail-biting ABANDON SHIP! (1957), also known as SEVEN WAVES AWAY...The Lady Eve's Reel Life looks at what I admit is the only Woody Allen movie that's ever interested me, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS (1986), which is perfect Thanksgiving viewing...and as part of a birthday week blogathon of her favorite films, Jessica reviewed a number of great films at Comet Over Hollywood, including STATE FAIR (1945) and SINCE YOU WENT AWAY (1944). Happy birthday, Jessica!

...I just caught up with Raquelle's review a little earlier this month of the new biography of Steve McQueen by Marc Eliot. I know relatively little about McQueen and was interested in the information shared in the review.

...At Classic Movie Blog, Diane shares her wonderful evening with Jane Powell...and Robert Osborne, Marge Champion, and Dickie Moore!

...The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles warns that studios want to stop renting archival 35mm prints. They've created a petition advocating that revival houses continue being able to screen prints in 35mm.

...The Snow White film MIRROR, MIRROR (2012) looks pretty goofy, with Julia Roberts (in a hideous wardrobe) playing the evil queen for laughs. Phil Collins' daughter Lily plays Snow White. Here's the trailer.

...Notable Passing: POLDARK star Robin Ellis shared the sad news of the passing of his POLDARK costar, Richard Morant. Morant played Dr. Dwight Enys in the first season of POLDARK, handing the role off to Michael Cadman for the show's second year. Morant was born into an acting family; he was the nephew of actors Linden Travers (THE LADY VANISHES) and Bill Travers (BORN FREE) and the cousin of actress Penelope Wilton (DOWNTON ABBEY). By his first marriage, which ended in 1978, he was the son-in-law of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

...This week's roundup is a bit shorter than usual owing to a busy pre-Thanksgiving weekend. For more classic film news, please visit my recent posts This and That, Warner Archive News, and In Disney News...

Have a great week!

  2. I don't know about anyone else but I'm having a hard time accepting Julia Roberts - who once played Tinker Bell - as the wicked queen.
