Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...Barnes & Noble's annual November Criterion Collection half-price sale is now underway! The sale runs through December 4th.

...As was the case last year, Amazon also has some Criterion discs currently for sale half-price; check out individual titles to verify pricing.

...Over at Oldies.com there is a half-price VCI sale through November 20th.

...A Pennsylvania home formerly owned by "Mister Rogers," Fred Rogers, is for sale.

...Actor Mark Harmon has coauthored a new nonfiction WWII history book, GHOSTS OF HONOLULU. The book is subtitled A JAPANESE SPY, A JAPANESE AMERICAN SPY HUNTER, AND THE UNTOLD STORY OF PEARL HARBOR. It was written with retired NCIS Special Agent Leon Carroll Jr.

...Apple TV+ is producing a new PEANUTS feature film. It will be directed by Steve Martino, who also made the very good THE PEANUTS MOVIE (2015).

...Disney plans to buy out the Hulu streaming service from Comcast.

...Kino Lorber has made a number of interesting announcements recently, starting with the news that a Dark Side of Cinema XVIII set will be coming out. Titles will be FINGER MAN (1955), CITY OF SHADOWS (1955), and CRASHOUT (1955). Sets XVI and XVII are also due out in 2024; XVI will be released January 9th, and Kino has mentioned that XVIII may actually be ready before XVII, which features three films starring Edward G. Robinson.

...Coming from Kino Lorber on January 9th: HAS ANYBODY SEEN MY GAL (1952) and THE ROAD TO HONG KONG (1962). Kino has also just announced the forthcoming Blu-ray release of a film I love, Mitchell Leisen's NO MAN OF HER OWN (1950), starring Barbara Stanwyck and John Lund.

...Finally, Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release of the COLUMBO series has been pushed back a month, from a November release date to December 19th -- just in time for Christmas gift giving.

...Good news for repertory cinema in Los Angeles: The 101-year-old Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood has reopened at long last, and the century-old Vista Theatre, now owned by Quentin Tarantino, is reopening this weekend as well. Both theaters have been remodeled. I took this photo of the Vista in 2014.

...I hope to catch up with WHAT HAPPENS LATER (2023) at some point, starring, co-written, and directed by Meg Ryan. David Duchovny costars. Here's a review from Variety.

...Leonard Maltin has briefly reviewed Scott Eyman's new book CHARLIE CHAPLIN VS. AMERICA: WHEN ART, SEX, AND POLITICS COLLIDED.

...Recent classic film reviews I've enjoyed reading: Jessica reviews June Allyson and Van Johnson in REMAINS TO BE SEEN (1953) at Comet Over Hollywood...Jacqueline wrote about the classic film noir CRISS CROSS (1949) at Another Old Movie Blog...Erica wrote about MILDRED PIERCE (1945), focusing on Jack Carson's character Wally, at her blog Poppity Loves Classic Films...CineSavant Glenn Erickson has reviewed IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE (1958) at Trailers From Hell. I also just reviewed that one...Nathan Cone has written about LA BAMBA (1987) for Texas Public Radio. The movie was recently released by the Criterion Collection.

...Notable Passing: Former child actress Judy Nugent has passed away at 83. Her death was announced by her daughter-in-law, actress Anne Lockhart, daughter of June. Nugent's films included Douglas Sirk's MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (1954), seen here, and THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW (1956). She was Jane Powell's kid sister in THE GIRL MOST LIKELY (1957). Nugent was married for two decades to actor Buck Taylor, son of character actor Dub Taylor. Her sister Carol Nugent, who survives, was also a child actress.  A while back Judy gave a fun interview to Western Clippings which I recommend.

...More Notable Passings: Peter S. Fischer, who wrote for ELLERY QUEEN and COLUMBO and co-created MURDER, SHE WROTE, has died at 88...Actress Shannon Wilcox has died at 80. She had supporting roles in numerous theatrical films; for Hallmark Channel she costarred with her daughter, actress Kelli Williams, in A BOYFRIEND FOR CHRISTMAS (2004)...FRIENDS costar Matthew Perry, the son of actor John Bennett Perry, sadly died recently at the age of 54. While I wasn't a FRIENDS viewer, I fondly recall his romcom with Salma Hayek, FOOLS RUSH IN (1997), which I hope to revisit soon, and I also enjoyed his brief recurring role on TV's THE WEST WING...Tyler Christopher, who played Nikolas Cassidine on GENERAL HOSPITAL, has passed on at the age of 50...Peter White, who played Linc Tyler on ALL MY CHILDREN for decades, has died at 86.

...And more Notable Passings: Longtime Los Angeles film programmer Doug Jones died on November 2nd. His death was announced by Vidiots, where he had worked as a programmer in recent months...Cinematographer John Bailey, whose many films included GROUNDHOG DAY (1993), died at 81. Another of my favorites he filmed was FOR LOVE OF THE GAME (1999) with Kevin Costner. Bailey was married to editor Carol Littleton (E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL)...Director Robert Butler has passed away at 95. He directed pilots of multiple successful TV series, including HILL STREET BLUES, and co-created REMINGTON STEELE. Earlier in his career he directed THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES (1969) and THE BAREFOOT EXECUTIVE (1971) for Disney.
