Robert Novak: "The Ginsburg Standard"
It's heartening to know, per Robert Novak, that John Roberts' colleagues consider him "Scalia...without the fireworks." I'll happily take another Scalia, with or without fireworks, thank you very much.

Interesting. A long profile in the Modesto Bee on Saturday had Robert's friends saying that he definitely was not a conservative and "was no Scalia or Thomas." They said he was very much like O'Conner (yuck) and they also said that O'Conner thought he was a great choice. Furthermore, these friends said that he would be like Kennedy (double yuck). I don't have a good feeling about this nominee.
Check out Confirm Them tonight, they have some encouraging thoughts about Roberts posted there too. Some of his court decisions have also boded well.
I would prefer that Roberts' bona fides as a conservative were more obvious (like, say, a Michael Luttig...or a Scalia) but I'm hopeful. Unfortunately we're not going to know for sure until the decisions start coming down. Another case-by-case O'Connor, without a clear philosophy about the Constitution and the role of the judiciary, would be a terrible disappointment.
