Just What the L.A. Times Sports Section Doesn't Need

Rumor has it that disgraced L.A. Times columnist/blogger Michael Hiltzik will be reassigned to "sports investigations" after serving his suspension.

The Times Sports section is one of the main reasons left to subscribe to the paper. If Times editor Dean Baquet doesn't believe Hiltzik could continue to write "credibly" about the business world, why does it stand to reason Hiltzik could write credibly about sports?

Is the sports section such a poor relation at the Times that they deserve to have Hiltzik fobbed off on their department? Does Baquet have a different standard for business writers than for sports writers?

I suspect that the sports section pays a lot of the overhead at the Times by keeping people like me as subscribers, and I find this development extremely disappointing.
