New on DVD: Disney Treasures, Wave 8

Tuesday, November 11th, is the release date for the latest round of entries in the Disney Treasures series.

The Treasures releases are beloved by Disney fans, as they are produced with great care and include interesting extras. This year's releases are the MICKEY MOUSE CLUB serial ANNETTE (click title of this post), DR. SYN: THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH, and THE CHRONOLOGICAL DONALD, VOLUME 4: 1951-1961.

I have been hoping for the release of ANNETTE, which I saw in syndicated reruns as a child. The set includes the complete MICKEY MOUSE CLUB episodes which accompanied the first and last episodes of ANNETTE.

My husband has fond memories of seeing DR. SYN as a child. Ultimate Disney already has a review posted of DR. SYN, saying "it looks and sounds fantastic." The set includes the three episodes as they originally aired on TV, along with an edited version which was released theatrically.

The DONALD set includes letterboxed CinemaScope cartoons which are being seen on DVD in widescreen for the first time. Two of the cartoons are accompanied by commentary tracks.

Now if Disney would just release another volume of SPIN AND MARTY...and the I'M NO FOOL series of cartoons hosted by Jiminy Cricket, which many of us fondly remember watching back in elementary school. We mentioned to Leonard Maltin how much we'd love to see these on DVD when we had the good fortune to meet him briefly on the USC campus in late September.

Disney fans owe Mr. Maltin a great debt for his continued strong advocacy of this DVD series, which has apparently not always been an easy "sell" to Disney's DVD production division. Kudos go to Disney as well for continuing to back this series each year. Here's hoping there are new Treasures releases for many years to come.

Update: Here's the Ultimate Disney review of ANNETTE.

I'm also happy they release these treasures periodically. I remember just loving Annette as a child and am sad now about her medical condition. And another Spin and Marty sounds just fine to me. I was real happy they came out with True Life Adventures.

PS I've updated my blog :)
PPS I'm going to Disneyland this afternoon after work so see the special Veteran's Day ceremony at 4 by the flag pole and then the last performance of Parade of Dreams.

Thanks, Irene, I just went over and checked out your blog. Hope you had a great day at Disneyland Tuesday -- maybe you'll post photos? The slide shows you've set up on your blog are nifty.

We hope to visit the park later this week. Was the castle open yet?

Happy Birthday!
Laura
