Disney Drops Narnia Film Series

I was sorry to learn that Disney won't be filming the planned third film in the NARNIA series, THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

Apparently Disney is concerned that the film would not make enough money to justify an anticipated budget of $200 million. ($200 million?!)

DAWN TREADER would have been released in May 2010.

Update: More from the Los Angeles Times.

Perhaps the second film should never have been pushed back to a summer release?

I hope Walden was sharp enough to have a contract that will allow a box set DVD/Blu-ray should another "studio" (really, distribution company) pick up the series.

Also, keep in mind that the cinemas keep about half of the gross. So, in theory, a $200 million film has to gross $400 million worldwide for the studio to recover COST. Of course, merchandise, cable/broadcast rights, DVDs, theme park stuff, etc. will help add to the profits.
