Today at Disneyland: Dinner in the Park

We paid a very quick trip out to Disneyland tonight for a family birthday dinner at Plaza Inn:

I am in the middle of a million things right now, but in my precious little downtime, I am reading the Golden Anniversary edition of Mouse Tales and finding it very interesting. Over here at WDW "nearer" us the is no Rivers of America and Storybook Land like at DL- I have been most curious about those areas - is Storybook Land still around? Are they still doing the boat rides through Rivers of America?

Hi J.C.,

Yes, Storybook Land Canal is alive and well in Anaheim. It can be enjoyed either by boat or via Casey Jr.'s Circus Train. (It's interesting, there is also a Storybook Land Canal in Paris, but it is only open during their busiest season so we didn't get to check it out.) It's one of my favorite areas.

Guests can travel the Rivers of America via the Mark Twain, the Sailing Ship Columbia, the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, or -- if you just want to get to the Island -- Tom Sawyer rafts. (Alas, the Mike Fink Keelboats are no more, although one is on display along the Rivers of America.) It's kinda sad that WDW only runs the Liberty Belle. The river being "alive" with activity is part of what Walt Disney saw as good "show."

The Rivers of America is also where Fantasmic! takes place, which is much different from WDW, where the show takes place in its own stadium at the Hollywood Studios. At Disneyland guests stake out spots along the river to watch, and the show utilizes the Columbia (for a spectacular Peter Pan sequence) and the Mark Twain (for the finale) along with rafts.

Hope all your projects are going well!

Best wishes,
Laura

Sounds excellent. I see the have been finishing a referbushing of the Rivers area. One day we will get out there to see it all for ourselves. I very interested in the history of it all and the changes.
One thing I so much enjoy about Disney parks is the attention to emersing the visitor into the environment. Some parks and "lands" do it better than others, but overall Walt's commitment to show and the visitor is evident in the design. Epcot, for example is such a neat place to go, for once you go into the various lands in World Showcase, it's easy to get caught up in the atmosphere. Even the architectual tricks of forced perspective, curbing, etc emmerse the visitor in the environment for a true escape.
Thank for the good luck wishes. I am not only beginning to teach a class for the summer session, but also working on two book projects and abstracts. I will need all the luck and time I can get!
