Laura's Miscellaneous Musings in The Dark Pages
I've read the film noir newsletter The Dark Pages since its first issue early in 2005, so I was quite honored when I was asked to contribute to a special edition on the classic film noir OUT OF THE PAST (1947). The finished copy landed in my mailbox today!
The Dark Pages is edited by Karen Burroughs Hannsberry, the author of FEMME NOIR: BAD GIRLS OF FILM and BAD BOYS: THE ACTORS OF FILM NOIR.
Kristina Dijan, whose articles have also appeared in Classic Images and Films of the Golden Age, is the publication's Senior Writer and regular contributor.
The Dark Pages is usually eight pages long, but this special edition devoted entirely to OUT OF THE PAST is more magazine than newsletter, totaling a whopping 36 pages!
I've barely started reading the issue, but it looks to be filled with interesting articles, including pieces on the soundtrack music, the artist behind the movie poster, an analysis of the character Ann (Virginia Huston), a comparison of the film to the original Geoffrey Homes book BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH, reprints of 1947 reviews of the movie, and more. There's also a two-page bibliography of resources on the film and its history.
My post on the film's locations in Bridgeport, California, was adapted and expanded for the issue, running three pages.
You can subscribe to the Dark Pages at All That Noir, or purchase back issues at Oldies.com.
