Composer John Barry Dies at 77

Oscar-winning composer John Barry has died at the age of 77.

Barry died on Sunday, January 30th.

Barry won two Oscars for BORN FREE (1966), for Best Score and Best Song. His other Oscars were for THE LION IN WINTER (1968), OUT OF AFRICA (1985), and DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990).

Barry's other notable work included scoring 11 James Bond movies.

My favorite Barry score was SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980), which incorporated Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" along with Barry's original music.

There's more at the L.A. Times Pop and Hiss blog, the London Daily Telegraph, and from the Associated Press.

February 3rd Update: There's a detailed biography from Kimberly Lindbergs at the TCM Movie Morlocks blog.
