A Visit to Forest Lawn Glendale, Part 1

I'm following up my recent series on Holy Cross Cemetery with a pair of posts on last year's visit to the original Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California.

My husband and I visited this historic cemetery just prior to last year's TCM Classic Film Festival, accompanied by our friends Aurora and Annmarie.

I've previously shared one or two photos from this visit, such as one included in a post on REAR WINDOW (1954), but with three film festivals in a matter of weeks last spring, I never caught up on sharing the rest.

We strolled the grounds and paid our respects to a number of favorite filmmakers, including Walt Disney:

Spencer Tracy:

Errol Flynn:

James Stewart and his wife and stepson are buried on a high hill:

Dan Dailey:

Clayton Moore, the "Lone Ranger":

Robert Taylor:

Joan Blondell:

Director Mervyn LeRoy:

Jean Hersholt:

Humphrey Bogart's final resting place is in a garden behind this locked door; I believe that Lauren Bacall is there as well:

My second and final post on Forest Lawn Glendale will be up in a few days. (Update: Part 2 is here.)

Update: Please also visit A Visit to the Forest Lawn Museum.

I have read conflicting reports - nothing definite - about Lauren Bacall's burial place.

An educated guess tells me that she would have been buried in New York, where she lived and died, and where her funeral service took place, and would have had a Jewish funeral. I see no reason to believe that she was buried in Hollywood.

There's so much history there, KC!

Hi Mel! Find a Grave lists Forest Lawn Glendale for Bacall, however, it does not list the location there. (Humphrey Bogart is in the Garden of Memory.) It seemed to me a likely possibility that a space was purchased for her at the time of his death. However, I've found nothing more definite than that Find a Grave reference and would be glad to update the post with more accurate information if anyone can provide it.

Best wishes,
Laura

Must be a goose bumpy experience standing before the final resting place of so many people us film fans come to in some cases idolize or in others consider these people good friends that are part of our home through out our lives in some cases.

Laura, Lauren Bacall is NOT interred next to Bogart at Forest Lawn. I visited a couple of years ago to trace the final resting place of a distant cousin, Victor McLaglen – he’s in the same locked Garden of Memory as Bogie, just a few feet away. However, much to my surprise, the places next to Bogart were not occupied by Lauren Bacall – in fact, we searched all the names in that Garden of Memory and none are hers. As others have said, supposedly she is buried at Forest Lawn but the exact location seems to be a closely guarded secret.

Thank you for sharing your detective work, Chris, that's very interesting -- including your own Hollywood family connection. Appreciate it!

It's quite possible that her urn was placed in the same niche as Bogart and felt no need to put her name on the plaque. Or maybe her children kept her ashes.

I heard an interview with Lauren where she remembered the staff at Glendale asking if they should leave room for her in Bogie’s niche when he was being interred. She said no! She was NOT going in there. Sounded like she did not want to be cremated. Not surprised that her burial location cannot be found nearbBogie’s. But why does FAG say she was buried at Forest Lawn Glendale?? Looks like we will never find out!!

Thanks to both Sopupy and Ron B. for the interesting conjecture and background on Lauren Bacall's final resting place. Ron, thank you very much for that interview information, which fits in with the information shared above by Chris.

Perhaps one day the mystery will be solved...

Best wishes,
Laura

A few years ago, I called Forrest Lawn to see if Lauren Bacall was buried with Humphrey Bogart. Apparently she is not. I also read that the author, whose last name is Kelly said that her body was cremated and her ashes scattered. If so, it would possibly be in New York where she lived.

There are not currently any photographs at FindaGrave substantiating that Lauren Bacall is buried with Jason Robards. He and Bacall divorced in 1969, and his widow Lois is buried next to him.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/19925/jason-nelson-robards

Bacall's FindaGrave page states it was confirmed her ashes were with Bogart in 2021, but no additional details.

Perhaps someday we'll find out for certain!

Best wishes,
Laura
