TCM Star of the Month: Fredric March

Oscar-winning actor Fredric March is the March Star of the Month on Turner Classic Movies.

27 films starring March are on this month's TCM schedule. The Star of the Month lineup begins this evening, March 5th, and will continue on each Tuesday evening this month.

March was previously TCM's Star of the Month in October 2010; anyone interested in comparing the schedules may visit my 2010 post here.

Below is the complete lineup; click any hyperlinked title for the related review. Times for each time zone may be found on the TCM schedule.

March 5th

DESIGN FOR LIVING (1933)
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932)
SMILIN' THROUGH (1932)
THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET (1934)
THE DARK ANGEL (1935)
THERE GOES MY HEART (1938)

March 12th

A STAR IS BORN (1937)
NOTHING SACRED (1937)
LES MISERABLES (1935)
ANNA KARENINA (1935)
MARY OF SCOTLAND (1936)
ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936)
THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN (1944)
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (1949)
IT'S A BIG COUNTRY (1951)

March 19th

THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)
ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST (1948)
ONE FOOT IN HEAVEN (1941)
BEDTIME STORY (1941)
TOMORROW, THE WORLD! (1944)
SUSAN AND GOD (1940)

March 26th

INHERIT THE WIND (1960)
MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT (1959)
EXECUTIVE SUITE (1954)
SEVEN DAYS IN MAY (1964)
THE YOUNG DOCTORS (1961)
...TICK...TICK...TICK (1970)

A note for anyone who may have looked at an earlier version of the lineup: THE WILD PARTY (1929), originally scheduled for March 5th, did not make the final schedule.

Among the films being shown I'm particularly fond of THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET and the romantic comedies THERE GOES MY HEART and BEDTIME STORY. ONE FOOT IN HEAVEN is also quite a lovely movie about the life of a dedicated minister.

Anthony Adverse has a foreword or preface of about 18 minutes, and the leading man in the segment is Louis Hayward playing opposite Anita Louise with Claude Rains as his antagonist. It made a star of Hayward..

March, according to my late dad, was the favourite of my namesake (Paddy) grandfather. Therefore, March was a favourite, along with Tracy and Guinness, of my dad, and he passed along that admiration to his daughters.

The tipping point for my daughter joining the club was showing her Nothing Sacred last year upon yet another viewing of Inherit the Wind. We're going to have fun this month. And it will be easier to keep track thanks to you, Laura.

ANTHONY ADVERSE is a film I really need to catch up with -- marvelous cast. I particularly enjoy Anita Louise and am glad to have her sequence with Louis Hayward pointed out, I'll keep that in mind regarding future viewing.

Best wishes,
Laura
