Quick Preview of TCM in March

Just a few days ago Turner Classic Movies released its February schedule, and now the March schedule is available as well!

The first three days of March are the conclusion of TCM's 31 Days of Oscar, then the March schedule begins in earnest on March 4th.

Fredric March is, appropriately enough, the March Star of the Month. Over two dozen films starring the actor will be shown on Tuesday evenings, beginning in prime time and continuing overnight.

March was previously the Star of the Month in October 2010. For a walk down memory lane on that month's schedule, my 2010 post may be found here.

The TCM Spotlight will be focused on "newspaper movies."

There are a couple of interesting films airing on TCM in March which might possibly be TCM premieres: TOP O' THE MORNING (1949), starring Bing Crosby and Ann Blyth, and THE FAKE (1953), starring Dennis O'Keefe and Coleen Gray.

Both films were available to stream on Netflix a few years ago, and it's nice to see them turn up again. TOP O' THE MORNING is part of an Irish-themed double bill on March 10th, and of course there's an entire day of Irish-themed movies one week later on St. Patrick's Day!

Also worth noting: KING OF JAZZ (1930), which was originally on the December schedule but was bumped, will be shown in prime time in March.

Treasures From the Disney Vault returns in March with a lineup of animal films including CHARLIE, THE LONESOME COUGAR (1967) and YELLOWSTONE CUBS (1963). Both films are on our Disney shelf and were enjoyed by my children when they were young.

Noir Alley resumes on March 9th, after taking February off for 31 Days of Oscar. The March Noir Alley titles are D.O.A. (1950), HIGH SIERRA (1941), LADY IN THE LAKE (1947), and BORDER INCIDENT (1949).

March movie themes include prizefighters, frontier explorers, detectives, burglars, and films with "Alice" in the title.

There will be multifilm tributes honoring Rex Harrison, Constance Bennett, Cyd Charisse, Ann-Margret, Fred Astaire, Errol Flynn, and Betty Compson.

Click any hyperlinked title in this post for my review and cast info. I'll be posting more on the March schedule here around March 1st!

In the meantime, Dick Powell continues as the December Star of the Month, with Kathryn Grayson coming in January and 31 Days of Oscar in February.
