Sedona, Arizona: Chapel of the Holy Cross and Johnny Guitar (1954) Locations

One of the most beautiful and interesting places we visited during our recent road trip stop in Sedona was the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

The chapel sits at the top of a winding road and was designed to blend unobtrusively into its impressive surroundings.  If you click on the photo below to enlarge it, you can just barely make out the gray-ish top of the chapel peeking over the trees in the center of the photo.

Please visit the official website for good photos of the chapel, along with its history. The chapel, which is part of a Catholic parish, was completed in 1956.

The stunning view from the Chapel's entrance:

Standing at the Chapel doors, if one looks off to the right, this is the view:

Well, guess what?! This happens to be the exact location of Vienna's in JOHNNY GUITAR (1954). Here's a photo of the set:

Also, if we go back to Coffee Pot Rock elsewhere in town...

...you can see that the movie was also filmed on the town set...

...first built there for ANGEL AND THE BADMAN (1947) and subsequently added to for other films.

And that's how JOHNNY GUITAR came to be one of the street names in the housing development which stands on this land today.

Coming soon: More Sedona film locations; DESERT FURY (1947) locations in Cottonwood, Arizona; a WESTWARD THE WOMEN (1951) location in Kanab, Utah; and more!
