Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...Coming to Blu-ray soon from Kino Lorber: The Anna May Wong Collection. The three-film set will contain DANGEROUS TO KNOW (1938), KING OF CHINATOWN (1939), and ISLAND OF LOST MEN (1939). The prints will be from new 2K masters.

...Coming from Kino Lorber June 14th: A Fu Manchu double feature disc with THE MYSTERIOUS DR. FU MANCHU (1929) and THE RETURN OF DR. FU MANCHU (1930). The Blu-ray prints will also be from new 2K masters. Warner Oland plays the title role, and Jean Arthur and Neil Hamilton costar in both films.

...But wait, there's more! Today Kino Lorber announced a Dark Side of Cinema IV Blu-ray collection "coming soon." Titles are Deanna Durbin in LADY ON A TRAIN (1945), William Powell, Shelley Winters, and Marsha Hunt in TAKE ONE FALSE STEP (1949), and Maria Montez and Sabu in TANGIER (1946). As far as I know the latter two films have not had a VHS or DVD release, and I'm especially excited about the Durbin film as it's a favorite and I hadn't expected any more of her films to be released by Kino Lorber. What a happy surprise!

...Kino Lorber has also announced a replacement program for their new BLUE SKIES (1946) Blu-ray due to a sound issue in the tap-dancing sequences.

...The L.A. Conservancy, which I joined last year, has announced the return of its "Last Remaining Seats" series this June, screening classic films in historic Los Angeles theaters. Titles will be announced on April 6th; the member pre-sale is also scheduled for that date.

...The Warner Archive Collection will release DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1941) on Blu-ray in May, starring Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, and Ingrid Bergman. They have also announced a Blu-ray of the 1931 version starring Fredric March, Miriam Hopkins, and Rose Hobart is coming for Halloween.

...The 101 Coffee Shop on Franklin in Los Angeles closed during COVID lockdowns, as I shared in a January 2021 roundup. A new restaurant, the Clark Street Diner, has opened in the same location at 6145 Franklin, on the bottom floor of the Best Western Hollywood Hills. The Los Angeles Times gives it a thumbs up.

...At her blog Comet Over Hollywood Jessica pays tribute to one of my all-time favorite films, YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER (1942), starring Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth: "...truly a glittering joy from start to finish."

...A cute-looking Little Golden Book coming this September: SANTA STOPS AT DISNEYLAND.

...Jennifer Churchill and her son Weston are hosting a new 10-part "Classic Films for Kids" series on the Film Detective's streaming channel.

...Here's the new trailer for TOP GUN: MAVERICK (2022) starring Tom Cruise. It opens in theaters May 27th. The top supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer, and Jennifer Connelly.

...At Hometowns to Hollywood, Annette Bochenek looks at significant places from the life of Lola Lane.

...Rachel reviews one of my favorite Doris Day films, CALAMITY JANE (1953), at Hamlette's Soliloquy. April 3rd is the centennial of Doris Day's birth; look for a post here that day.

...Former Miss California and movie actress Margia Dean celebrates her centennial birthday on Thursday, April 7th. I plan to have a post up to celebrate her 100th birthday!

...Flicker Alley, Kino Lorber, and ClassicFlix are all currently having sales.

...I recently reviewed the gorgeous new Warner Archive Blu-ray CAPTAINS OF THE CLOUDS (1942). I enjoyed Glenn Erickson's new review: "...looks incredible in Technicolor, like dazzling, like, go find the sunglasses." True!

...Lady Eve's Reel Life and Another Old Movie Blog are cohosting the Caftan Woman Blogathon, Honoring Patricia Nolan-Hall, on May 6, 2022. Please visit either of these blogs to sign up and choose a topic.  The tribute I wrote to our dear friend last month may be found here.

...Notable Passing: Longtime TV director Marvin J. Chomsky has died at 92. He was a four-time Emmy winner who also directed the James Garner movie TANK (1984).

Interesting releases from Kino Lorber. "TAKE ONE FALSE STEP"(1949) is a really enjoyable William Powell film - the opening credits grab you straight off!

Aw, thank *you* Rachel! I loved revisiting CALAMITY JANE via your article. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Jerry, I agree. I've only seen TAKE ONE FALSE STEP once and look forward to revisiting it -- and I also look forward to seeing Kino Lorber's other upcoming releases!
