Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...It's hard to believe it's been seven years since a very special evening at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater celebrating the 75th anniversary of REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940). Here is a look back and a gallery of stills from this wonderful Christmas movie.

...Steve at Mystery File has reviewed FOUR FAST GUNS (1960), a little Western with James Craig I liked very much.

...A reader recently tipped me off to a 20-film musical collection from Sony/Mill Creek. Although I had a number of these Columbia Pictures films in other formats, there were several I didn't have, and it's a good price for 20 movies!

...The Warner Archive Collection will be releasing five Blu-rays in January. Titles are OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS (1928), WIFE VS. SECRETARY (1936), GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS (1939), RANCHO NOTORIOUS (1952), and THE LONG, LONG TRAILER (1954). A little something for everyone!

...A pair of Joan Bennett films are coming to DVD in the ClassicFlix Silver Series next March: VOGUES OF 1938 (1937) and TRADE WINDS (1938). Can't wait!

...DC films are shifting direction and WONDER WOMAN 3, starring Gal Gadot, will not be going forward, at least as currently envisioned.

...Kino Lorber Studio Classics made several interesting announcements over the past few days. Coming at yet-to-be-announced dates in 2023: IF I HAD A MILLION (1932), with a huge cast including W.C. Fields and Gary Cooper, and WILL PENNY (1967), starring Charlton Heston. (I wrote about WILL PENNY for Classic Movie Hub in 2021.) Coming on February 21st is Steve McQueen in THE HUNTER (1980), and I'm especially looking forward to Charlton Heston in SECRET OF THE INCAS (1954) on February 28th, with a commentary by our friend from 50 Westerns of the 50s, Toby Roan.

...TCM Classic Film Festival tickets are now on sale.

...Notable Passings: June Blair Nelson, who was married to David Nelson (seen here) from 1961 to 1975 and appeared in TV's THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET, has passed away at the age of 89...Kirstie Alley has died at the age of 71. Best known for TV's CHEERS (and maybe the 1982 film THE WRATH OF KHAN!), I especially enjoyed her in TV's NORTH AND SOUTH (1985-86) and in the film SUMMER SCHOOL (1987) with Mark Harmon...George Newall, cocreator of TV's SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, has passed on at 88. I enjoyed SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK as a child, and my own children watched it via DVDs...Bob McGrath, an original cast member of SESAME STREET, has died at 90.

I’d been having second thoughts about the TCMFF over the past few weeks, and then the recent stories that LA County is considering reinstating masks solidified my decision not to go. Sorry that we won’t meet up there next spring, but maybe there will still be other opportunities.

Hi Seth, I will miss seeing you next year!! I understand the dilemma, however. My husband wrote to ask if they would give full refunds if masks are instituted next spring and just received a boilerplate response about their usual refund policies, so it's definitely purchase a pass at your own risk and hope for the best at this juncture.

Best wishes,
Laura
