Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...This week Kino Lorber announced it will be releasing Blu-ray and 4K editions of SHANE (1953), from a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative.

...Kino Lorber also announced an upcoming Blu-ray release of BLUEBEARD (1944) and shared cover art and extras info for the January release of SCARLET STREET (1945).

...Leonard Maltin's colleague Alonso Durande shares holiday movie recommendations at Leonard's site. I appreciated his extensive listing of Hallmark Christmas DVDs.

...Speaking of Hallmark, I really liked HANUKKAH ON RYE (2022) earlier this year. It was just released on DVD.

...Movie Reviews: Leonard Maltin liked the Leonard Bernstein biopic MAESTRO (2023)...Glenn Erickson shared my enjoyment of the new Warner Archive Blu-ray release of DANCE, FOOLS, DANCE (1931)...Colin celebrates his 16th anniversary blogging at Riding the High Country with a review of Anthony Mann's THE LAST FRONTIER (1955)...Jeff Arnold's West takes a look at WIND RIVER (2017), a recent film starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen which I quite enjoyed...J.B. Kaufman's "Movie of the Month" is the silent Western THE SHERIFF'S BABY (1913)...Steve has reviewed NANCY DREW...TROUBLE SHOOTER (1939) at Mystery File.

...The ClassicFlix release of CAUSE FOR ALARM! (1951) starring Loretta Young and Barry Sullivan is slated for January 16, 2024.

...WHAT HAPPENS LATER (2023), starring, directed, and cowritten by Meg Ryan, came and went from local theaters in about a week, but it will be out on Blu-ray and DVD next month. David Duchovny costars.

...According to Deadline, the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood will reopen, but not until partway into 2025.

...I'm hearing rumblings in the local classic film community that the recently reopened Egyptian Theatre will not be available for the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival. Perplexing, if true, and it raises questions about how the festival will handle it, as the Hollywood Legion Theater is currently mired in conflict and may be unavailable as well. I'll be watching for more information.

...There will be a memorial service for actor Edmund Gwenn on Sunday afternoon, December 3rd, as his ashes are placed at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. His ashes were discovered in storage at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory earlier this year and are being moved to a more fitting final resting place which can be visited by the public. (Update: Please visit my post Memorial Service for Edmund Gwenn, which includes photos of this special event.)

...Notable Passings: Actress Frances Sternhagen has passed away at 93. She was a two-time Tony Award winner and appeared frequently in episodic television...I learned from the Western Clippings site that Nan Peterson died this past August at the age of 92. She had guest roles in a number of TV Westerns including LAWMAN and GUNSMOKE.

...Please note that Around the Blogosphere This Week will be on hiatus for the next three weeks due to travel and Christmas plans. The column will return on Saturday, December 30th, for what I'm guessing will be a lengthy year-end edition!
