Quick Preview of TCM in July
It's almost time to review the new June schedule on Turner Classic Movies, but first, here's a short preview of what's coming to the network in July!
The July Star of the Month will be Elvis Presley. I believe he was last a TCM Star of the Month two decades ago, in January 2001.
The July Noir Alley films are GUILTY BYSTANDER (1950), THE BRIBE (1949), THE BITTER STEMS (1956), aka LOS TALLOS AMARGOS, and CAUSE FOR ALARM! (1950).
A number of "newer" crime films will be shown in July. If a comment on the TCM message board is correct, they're part of a "neo-noir" series to be hosted by Eddie Muller and Ben Mankiewicz. I'll be watching for additional information to develop.
As usual, Independence Day will feature the musicals YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942), THE MUSIC MAN (1962), and 1776 (1972), along with other films appropriate for the day. There's a day of Olympics documentaries scheduled just before the Olympics are due to begin in Japan. Additional July themes include romantic comedies, juvenile delinquents, troubled musicians, sports romances, small towns, millionaires, Arabian nights fantasies, immigrants, spies, and films with "sun" or "sunny" in the title.
Filmmakers receiving multifilm tributes in July include William Wyler, Clark Gable, Brian De Palma, Fay Wray, Irene Dunne, Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, Natalie Wood, William Powell, and the team of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.
I'll have a more detailed look at the July schedule around the end of June. The June schedule will feature Cyd Charisse as the Star of the Month.
