Remembering Charlton Heston

Charlton Heston's funeral was held today at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Pacific Palisades.

Nancy Reagan entered the church on the arm of Tom Selleck and left with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Heston's costar in TRUE LIES.

I was particularly interested to read that 91-year-old Olivia DeHavilland, who lives in Paris, was in attendance at the service.

Heston had friends on both sides of the aisle -- among the attendees were staunch liberals Rob Reiner and Oliver Stone.

There have been some very nice Heston articles published over the last few days. Here's a sampling:

Remembering Charlton Heston, the Nicest Man 'That Ever Lived in Movies': That compliment about Heston came from Orson Welles, Heston's director and costar in TOUCH OF EVIL.

Excerpts from Charlton Heston's Letters: A selection from Heston's many letters to the editor at the L.A. Times over the years.

Charlton Heston: A Life in Film, TV and Theater: Susan King of the L.A. Times comments on some notable Heston performances.

Charlton Heston: The Times Obituary: A good writeup from the Times of London.

Charlton Heston 1923-2008: A lovely essay at Self-Styled Siren. She has kind words for one of my favorite Heston performances, his supporting role in THE BIG COUNTRY. If I could have asked for one character in that movie to have more screen time, it would have been Heston's Steve.

Remembering Moses: A tribute by Pat Boone, who attended today's service.

Rest in peace, Mr. Heston.
