Robert Montgomery Alert
May 21st is the 105th anniversary of the birth of one of my favorite actors, Robert Montgomery.
In honor of the day, Turner Classic Movies is showing a Montgomery marathon with a whopping 9 movies. The films are listed below; if I have previously reviewed a movie, the title is hyperlinked:
THEIR OWN DESIRE (1929): Montgomery and Norma Shearer are carefree young lovers who discover their parents are having an affair. A very good movie and the Norconian Resort too!
THE BIG HOUSE (1930): I've never seen this one and have set it to record.
STRANGERS MAY KISS (1931): Another Shearer-Montgomery teaming, with a strange but watchable pre-Code plot.
HIDE-OUT (1934): My favorite Montgomery film. His last couple scenes are absolutely wonderful. Maureen O'Sullivan is his leading lady.
THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY (1937): Montgomery teamed with William Powell -- they are the essence of '30s cool.
THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS (1938): Here's another film I'll be recording Thursday. Virginia Bruce co-stars.
MR. AND MRS. SMITH (1941): Montgomery, Carole Lombard, and Alfred Hitchcock team for a unique comedy.
HERE COMES MR. JORDAN (1941): A classic film which netted Montgomery his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor. I first saw this film at the late, lamented Vagabond Theater in Los Angeles.
LADY IN THE LAKE (1947): Montgomery starred and directed in this groundbreaking mystery using the camera to tell the story from a first-person point of view.
Here's more from Carrie at Classic Montgomery.
Classic film fans, start your recorders!
