Wild Weather in Orange County
Here's my 11-year-old working on getting a siphon going to drain our flooded front yard:
My older son texted that there's a tornado warning for a small tornado which touched down in Huntington Beach and is heading north.
Our backyard is currently a lake...haven't seen it flooded like that since February 2005.
Not the norm for Orange County today, that's for sure!

Whoa!
I'll say. My husband just ordered a pump in case we need it in the near future (rain is predicted to run into next week). The local Home Depot was out!
Best wishes,
Laura
Good luck! I hope it doesn't get worse. We've had too much water here the past few years; I certainly don't wish it on anyone else. I don't see gutters or downspouts, is that typical for CA?
Stay dry!
Missy
Thanks! Yes, it's very common not to have them as they're needed so rarely. My husband would like to install them at some point but we just haven't invested in the expense. I counted when I was on a walk a few months ago and I'd say maybe half the houses in our neighborhood, or slightly fewer, have rain gutters and downspouts.
Best wishes,
Laura
At my place we collect rainwater off the barn roof. It flows into an old 450 gallon wine tank, which I then pump into the main tank. There is nothing like a bath in rainwater...aaaahhh. Put a bucket under the eaves, fill with rain water, wash your hair with it, don't bother with conditioners. Your hair will be so silky soft :-)
That sounds really nice...must be beautiful where you're at! :)
Best wishes,
Laura
Laura I hope you weren't planning a review of the movie "The Rains Came". That would be bad timing. lol
LOL!! That's a good one. :)
Hmmm, maybe I should pull that out...and THE HURRICANE...SINGIN' IN THE RAIN...any other nominees? It's supposed to rain for a few days! We also are supposed to have more mini-tornados in the area, but I think I'll skip TWISTER!
Best wishes,
Laura
We just had a another severe weather and flooding warning there is thunder and lightning as I type. It's difficult getting in and out the building due to wind. So I'm leaning toward "The Hurricane". Besides, I loved the novel when I was a kid, and both the novel and the movie are still cracking good stories.
PS: Here is a pic of the weather at my location.

I loved seeing that photo, thanks for sharing it!
I have a client who has a rural home (like you, she has a barn!) up the coast in Petaluma. She said it's a good thing she doesn't have to go out to a job today because she's flooded in.
Best wishes,
Laura
I heard that many people have to evacuate thier homes in some parts of California and Los Angeles.
Yes, the areas which suffered wild fires in past months are in particular danger from mudslides. Fires and slides is an unfortunate cycle which repeats here on a regular basis. Other areas are having trouble with flooding as well as it is raining so hard in short periods of time.
We also have warnings that more tornados may be likely tomorrow. They hit up and down Los Angeles and Orange County yesterday. My son who attends high school said they evacuated all the classrooms with south-facing windows yesterday afternoon and they did not move to their last class period until the all clear was given. I can't remember anything like that happening in all the years I've lived in the area (I attended the same high school!).
Best wishes,
Laura
I suppose Pat Robertson would say California is paying for making a pact with you-know-who and having such nice weather most of the time.
I, on the other hand, would say that I hope you continue to stay safe and well!!!
Best-
Anne
