Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the Internet...

...HEDY LAMARR: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN FILM by Ruth Barton will be published on July 21st. This seems to be the year for Hedy Lamarr books, as BEAUTIFUL: THE LIFE OF HEDY LAMARR, by Stephen Shearer, will be out in September. It's great to know that writers are taking a fresh look at a very interesting woman.

...This list of Alfred Hitchcock's cameos in his films includes photos of his appearances and the minute mark in each film where he appears. Very nice!

...Matthew wrote a terrific post on Glynis Johns at Movietone News. I've got a tape of MIRANDA (1948) I really need to check out. It was directed by Ken Annakin, who also directed Johns in Disney's THE SWORD AND THE ROSE (1953).

...And here's a tribute Matthew wrote to Adele Mara.

...10:00 p.m. has traditionally been the hour for "appointment TV," but the networks are finding that there is new competition in that hour -- from programs recorded by DVR's earlier in the evening.

...I enjoyed this look at members of Congress who sleep in their offices.

...New book: THE WAY I SEE IT: A LOOK BACK AT MY LIFE ON LITTLE HOUSE was written by Melissa Sue Anderson, who played Mary on the TV series LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura, published PRAIRIE TALE last year.

...Here's Part 4 of Leo Grin's series on Lillian Gish and D.W. Griffith at Big Hollywood. Links for Parts 1, 2, and 3 can be found in last week's round-up.

...The consequences of Nanny Statism: Heinz Ketchup is changing their decades-old recipe in order to reduce salt by 25%. Let's hope we don't have a repeat of the New Coke debacle on our hands.

...Immortal Ephemera reviews CASS TIMBERLANE (1947) with Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, Zachary Scott, Mary Astor, Tom Drake, and Margaret Lindsay.

...Riding the High Country takes a look at the film OBSESSION (1949), starring Robert Newton and Sally Gray, directed by Edward Dmytryk.

...Here's a list of the oldest living members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

...Jennifer Griffin of Fox News Channel, who is battling a difficult form of breast cancer, has been keeping a blog.

Have a good week!

Thanks for the hat-tip, Laura: funny how everyone chooses that picture of Glynis! She looks adorable in it.
Hopefully Heinz will get the message before any of the stuff reaches us: we never even got New Coke thanks to the adverse reaction at your end.

I know you're a Joel McCrea fan. "Windwalker" plays on TCM this week as part of its "Native American Images on Film" series. Although Joel is not in the film, "Windwalker" has a McCrea family connection. Dusty Iron Wing McCrea, wife of Joel's son Jody, is a featured player and Peter McCrea, Joel's youngest son, is one of the editors. According to TCM, the 1981 film is "praised for its visual beauty and heartfelt story as well as its positive and respectful depiction of Native Americans." I'm sure Joel and Frances were proud of Peter and Dusty's involvement in the film. May 18, 11:30pm PT

You're very welcome, Matthew! I agree, it's a great picture of Glynis. You have motivated me to bump MIRANDA higher in my stack of movies!

Best wishes,
Laura
