TCM Previews August 2010 Summer Under the Stars Festival

Turner Classic Movies has issued a press release previewing its 8th annual Summer Under the Stars festival, scheduled for August 2010.

As regular TCM viewers are aware, each day in August showcases the work of a different actor.

14 actors will be first-timers for the SUTS festival. The newcomers are Julie Christie, Ethel Barrymore, Margaret O’Brien, Warren Beatty, John Mills, Woody Strode, Kathryn Grayson, Gene Tierney, Robert Stack, Ann Sheridan, Walter Pidgeon, John Gilbert, Lee Remick, and Thelma Todd.

That's a terrific list, and there are another 17 actors whose work will be spotlighted that month.

A whopping 52 of the movies shown in August will be TCM premieres.

I hope TCM will produce brand-new posters as they did for last year's festival. The artwork was fabulous.

May 24th Update: The complete August schedule listing all 31 stars has now been posted.

Hey Laura, thanks for linking to the posters. You're right - they're terrific. Stylish, very representative of the films, and smart. I you see the set for this year's, please post those too!

Just read the press release.

Ishtar? That's a joke, right?

Hi Dana, will do!!

Hi Tom, my one concern, which I neglected to mention in the main post, was how many "modern" films were listed in the press release. ISHTAR (and the Beatty day) is a big "miss" for me. (I thought this was Turner "Classic" Movies, LOL.) However, since they listed so many actors from the classic era, hopefully the film selection listed in the press release isn't representative.

Best wishes,
Laura

I cannot believe this is the first time for Ethel Barrymore. I suspect I have seen virtually all, but will record those I have not seen in a while. I hope that her day does not fall too closely to the camel movie. If it does, I will personally vacuum the television. Thank you for the posting.

Best. Gerald

Thanks so much for this! I'm looking forward to the Thelma Todd day. It'll give me an excuse to finish the project on her I started last year.

I'm hoping Norma Shearer makes it on the final list. There isn't a full list anywhere is there?

Hi Raquelle,

I haven't seen a list yet -- I'll post it as soon as I find one! :) I'd love a Shearer day too.

Best wishes,
Laura

Thanks for the headsup! Can't believe that this is Gene Tierney's first year. Can't wait to hear the rest of the stars this year

Hi Amanda!

I suspect they haven't done Gene Tierney before because so many of her films were made for 20th Century-Fox, though they have shown a few of her movies over the years. (DRAGONWYCK has been on a couple times in recent months.) I hope this means TCM has licensed some Fox films to show for the first time! :)

Best wishes,
Laura

I downloaded the August schedule today and find that August 1 is BASIL RATHBONE day. Don't miss "Confession" with Kay Francis and Jane Bryan. http://tinyurl.com/27c4nem

Rathbone as the ultimate seducer and cad. Rathbone - self described ham - could do anything. I hope TCM shows Love from a Stranger someday. A double bill of CONFESSION and LOVE FROM A STRANGER would show Rathbone at his creepy best. (With a bonus, these movies star two queens of women's pics: Kay Francis and Ann Harding)
