Fox Movie Channel in April: Highlights

Here's a preview of some of the interesting titles airing on Fox Movie Channel in April.

As always, keep in mind that Fox typically shows films multiple times over several weeks; I've only listed one air date per film. Check the schedule for alternate air dates.

...On Sunday, April 3rd, Roddy McDowell, Preston Foster, and Rita Johnson star in MY FRIEND FLICKA (1943), based on the classic novel by Mary O'Hara.

...On April 7th Preston Sturges' UNFAITHFULLY YOURS (1948) airs. It stars Rex Harrison, Linda Darnell, Rudy Vallee, and Barbara Lawrence. I wasn't particularly impressed with my first viewing of this one, but it has its advocates.

...Also on April 7th, don't miss the very entertaining ORCHESTRA WIVES (1942), starring George Montgomery, Ann Rutherford, and Glenn Miller. The band's performance of "At Last" is one of my favorite film scenes of the '40s.

...I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE (1951), airing on April 9th, stars the interesting combination of Dan Dailey, Susan Hayward, and George Sanders.

...The soapy ballet movie THE TURNING POINT (1977) is also on on the 9th. Leslie Browne, Oscar-nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her role as a young ballerina, is the daughter of Kelly Brown, who had notable dancing parts in several '50s musicals, including SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (1954), DADDY LONG LEGS (1955), and THE GIRL MOST LIKELY (1958).

...James Stewart and Simone Simon star in SEVENTH HEAVEN (1937) on April 12th. This is a Stewart film I've not yet caught up with.

...The April 13th lineup includes STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER (1952), with Clifton Webb as John Philip Sousa, and a very good supporting cast including Ruth Hussey, Robert Wagner, and Debra Paget.

...DESTINATION GOBI (1953) sounds quite interesting. It was directed by Robert Wise and stars Richard Widmark and Don Taylor; it's about U.S. Navy weathermen on a mission in the Gobi desert during WWII. Those are some Class A moviemakers in a rather unique storyline. It will be shown April 14th.

...THE RAZOR'S EDGE (1946) is on April 18th. The superb cast includes Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, John Payne, Anne Baxter, Herbert Marshall, and Clifton Webb. Kevin's Movie Corner reviewed the movie earlier this month.

...On April 23rd, GARDEN OF EVIL (1954) stars Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward, and Richard Widmark.

...For those who didn't catch it last month: FOREVER AMBER (1947) will be shown again April 28th. It stars Linda Darnell, Cornel Wilde, George Sanders, and Richard Greene.

...The great Robert Ryan stars in HOUSE OF BAMBOO (1955) on April 30th. It was directed by Samuel Fuller, costarring Robert Stack.

Happy April viewing!

I loved the 'At Last' scene from Orchestra Wives too. As a matter of fact I went and bought the mp3 soon after seeing it for the first time (the actual soundtrack of the film is available, as well as Glenn Miller's studio recordings of the songs).

My Friend Flicka is a nice family film, but struck me as a pale shadow of the book, which I always thought seemed more a novel for adults even though it's marketed as children's literature.

Hi Elisabeth,

Glad to hear from someone else who appreciates ORCHESTRA WIVES and Glenn Miller. :) I've got a nice four-disc Miller set I love listening to.

It's been decades since I read MY FRIEND FLICKA but my vague memory matches with yours, that it really seemed a bit more aimed at adults. I recorded the film -- I enjoy the adult actors in the cast so it will be interesting to check it out.

Thanks for stopping by!

Best wishes,
Laura
