A Visit to Oakwood Memorial Park

Here's another in my "catch-up" series of overdue photo posts. Another in this series, of my 2018 visit to the Hollywood Museum, was posted last month.

In the spring of 2018 we visited some film-related historic sites with friends who were in town for the TCM Classic Film Festival.

We made a brief stop at the Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, which is the final resting place of famed dancing partners Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Ginger is buried with her mother Lela:

Fred is buried in another part of the park:

Nearby is Fred's sister and early dance partner, Adele:

An interesting bit of related trivia is that Adele's first husband was Lord Charles Cavendish, a son of the Duke of Devonshire. They were married at the family estate, Chatsworth, in England. (Charles died in 1944.) The city of Chatsworth in California, where the cemetery is located, is named for the Chatsworth estate, and one of the city's main thoroughfares is named Devonshire Street.

Actress Gloria Grahame is also buried at Oakwood:

I have several more photo posts to come in the weeks ahead.

Additional photo posts on the final resting places of historic Hollywood figures: A Visit to Forest Lawn Glendale, Part 1, A Visit to Forest Lawn Glendale, Part 2, A Visit to the Forest Lawn Museum, A Visit to Hollywood Forever Cemetery, A Visit to Westwood Village Memorial Park - The Musicians, A Visit to Westwood Village Memorial Park - The Comedians, A Visit to Westwood Village Memorial Park - The Actors, A Visit to Westwood Village Memorial Park - Writers, Directors, and More, A Visit to Holy Cross Cemetery, Part 1, A Visit to Holy Cross Cemetery, Part 2, A Visit to Holy Cross Cemetery, Part 3, A Visit to Desert Memorial Park, Los Angeles National Cemetery, A Visit to Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Part 1, A Visit to Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Part 2, A Visit to Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Part 3, and A Visit to Forest Lawn Cathedral City.

GINGER ROGERS is one of my favorite movie stars. Some info about her-she was married and divorced 5 times including to LEW AYRES and she was born in INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI. I also like GLORIA GRAHAME. Ginger and Gloria both won ACADEMY AWARDS. They also both worked with JIMMY STEWART-Ginger in VIVACIOUS LADY and Gloria had a part in ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE. Classic TV Fan

Hi Laura!
I had no idea that Chatsworth (scene of the filming of so many bread-and-butter westerns) was named for Chatsworth estate in Derbyshire in the Peak District National Park and seat of the Dukes of Devonshire (gets confusing, doesn't it!!). We have visited Chatsworth House and gardens a number of times as it is a very beautiful place. It is not at all uncommon to spot the Duke and Duchess pottering about.
I love that it has an unlikely connection with that familiar film site in California.

Ginger Rogers is a big favorite here as well, Classic TV Fan. As, of course, is Fred Astaire.

It's an interesting and unexpected connection, isn't it, Jerry? We also took our friends to visit what's left of Iverson Ranch that day.

We visited Chatsworth in Derbyshire in the late '80s and it's definitely high on my list as one of the most beautiful places on earth. So many stunning views!! I would love to return.

Best wishes,
Laura
