Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...Coming to Region B Blu-ray from the UK's Powerhouse Indicator: A limited edition of REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1941) with extras including a commentary track, new featurettes, the Lux Radio Theatre production of the story, and an 80-page book.

...Actress Debra Paget turned 89 on August 19th. Here is my 2014 birthday tribute, filled with film review links and beautiful photographs.

...An odd story has recently been making the rounds of social media claiming that six security men had to hold back John Wayne from assaulting Sacheen Littlefeather at the 1973 Academy Awards. Farran Smith Nehme, aka the Self-Styled Siren, has now thoroughly researched and debunked this fantasy in a well-written article.

...In April I mentioned an upcoming 3-D release of I, THE JURY (1953) from ClassicFlix. More information on this upcoming Blu-ray is now posted at the ClassicFlix site, including the news that it will be released in November.

...Coming from Kino Lorber Studio Classics November 29th: PEKING EXPRESS (1951), starring Joseph Cotten, Corinne Calvet, and Edmund Gwenn. I'm not familiar with this film and am curious to learn more.

...KC of Watching Classic Movies has just reviewed the new Warner Archive Blu-ray release of ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN (1948). For anyone who missed it, I also reviewed this film in early August.

...Sunday, August 21st, is Kimberly Truhler's latest History of Fashion in Film online presentation, titled "Film Noir and Fantasy." Details on how to see it are here. I always learn a great deal from Kimberly's talks.

...There are lots of Hallmark Christmas movies coming out on DVD this fall, including a nine-film set. Thanks to Ashley for the tip.

...A timely article as HBO Max deletes dozens of shows from its streaming service: "Why'd That Movie Disappear? Welcome to Streaming's Memory Hole Era."

...Actress Ashley Eckstein, the voice of the animated version of STAR WARS character Ahsoka Tano and the founder of the Her Universe fashion line, is married to former Major League shortstop David Eckstein, who at one point was on the Anaheim Angels. I enjoyed this story on the couple in the Los Angeles Times. I had the chance to see Ashley in person moderating a panel at May's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.

...Nancy Olson's memoir A FRONT ROW SEAT will be released on October 11th -- and signed copies can be ordered from Larry Edmunds Bookshop!

...Jessica recently reviewed HOLIDAY IN HAVANA (1949) at Comet Over Hollywood. It sounds like fun for those of us who enjoy "B" musicals, with a cast headed by Desi Arnaz, Mary Hatcher, and Ann Doran.

...Bill Kramer, the new head of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, has indicated in an interview that he would prefer that the annual awards show resume giving out all awards on camera. Will it happen? We'll find out on March 12, 2023.

...At Shadows and Satin, Karen takes a look at the new Flicker Alley set with HIGH TIDE (1947) and THE GUILTY (1947). I think I liked the movies a little more than she did, but completely agree with her that the extras are superb!

...One of the books I most look forward to this fall is HOLLYWOOD: THE ORAL HISTORY by Sam Wasson and the great Jeanine Basinger. It will be published by Harper on November 8th. "Legendary film scholar Jeanine Basinger and New York Times bestselling author Sam Wasson...have undertaken the monumental task of digesting...tens of thousands of hours of talk and weaving it into a definitive portrait of workaday Hollywood." I'm really curious to read it and see how they "wrap their arms around" this material.

...Tuesday, August 23rd, is the annual Rudolph Valentino Memorial Service at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

...Notable Passing: Director Wolfgang Petersen has passed on at the age of 81. His films included DAS BOOT (1981), IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993), and AIR FORCE ONE (1997).

...For additional recent links of interest to classic film fans, please check out my August 13th roundup.

Thank you so much for the lovely mention, Laura! I'm heartened by the interview from the new Academy head, and that oral history by Wasson and Basinger sounds like it may be a real winner!

Laura, I liked your description of the Sacheen Littlefeather/John Wayne assault story as fantasy, which it is. I think Farran Smith Nehme should be highly commended for her investigation story. I hope Farran can find out more about writer Joan Sadler, because it looks like that she she was the first to put the fake story into print in 1981.

Karen, you're very welcome! I hope that the Oscars ceremony will do a better job honoring a variety of filmmakers next year. I'm so curious about this new Basinger-Wasson book!

Walter, thank you so much for that kind feedback. I'm really glad Farran took it upon herself to do that research -- so thorough and expressed in such articulate fashion.

Best wishes,
Laura
