Photos From the Road: Red Rock Canyon

Our June road trip began with a breakfast stop at Katz N' Jammers Cafe in Lancaster.

We discovered this diner a few years ago and have returned to it several times. There's a great "retro" atmosphere...

...and the food is really good! (My husband and I split a pancake that day.)

We then stopped at Red Rock Canyon State Park off Highway 14. We were here briefly in 2021, but this time we paid a longer visit and went for a short hike.

Numerous Westerns, sci-fi, and horror movies have filmed at Red Rock Canyon over the years. There's a list at IMDb and also a very extensive list at Red Rock Canyon Movies.com.

As I noted in my post on our previous visit, one of the most memorable Westerns to film at Red Rock Canyon was William Wyler's THE BIG COUNTRY (1958).

The rock formations are incredibly striking!

THE MUMMY (1932) with Boris Karloff filmed at the location below. My favorite locations blog for the Sierras and other stops up and down Highways 395 and 14, The Great Silence, has some interesting scene comparisons, as well as an informative video.

Here's a panoramic view of the area; click on this or any photo to enlarge it for a closer look.

I look forward to stopping at Red Rock Canyon again when we travel north, and I hope to become more familiar with specific film locations as we make future visits.

Additional posts from this trip: A Visit to Marysvale Cemetery, Photos From the Road: Lone Pine Cemeteries, and, for Classic Movie Hub, Western Movie Locations.

Laura, please don't forget that the mob at Republic used Red Rock canyon a lot, despite the fact it was considerably farther afield - and therefore a bigger hit on the budgets - than Iversons. Most notably I remember Red Rock Canyon from the exposure it got in the first 'Commando Cody' serial, "Radar Men From The Moon".

My owner (wife) and I always love your reviews and comments here in sweltering Pasadena. Hope its better there behind the Orange Curtain.

bwob, it's amazing how many places Red Rock Canyon turns up! I've really enjoyed beginning to explore it, along with Iverson and also Vasquez Rocks. I'll be watching for it in future viewing, including Republic films.

Thank you so much for the kind words from you and you wife, it's deeply appreciated. We're very hot here too -- stay as cool as you can!!

Best wishes,
Laura
