Coming to DVD: Little Women (1978)
Marvelous news from TVShowsonDVD today: the 1978 television production of LITTLE WOMEN is coming to DVD on October 9th.I thought this was an absolutely wonderful production back when it first aired on TV, and I have been longing to see it again. The four March girls are played by Meredith Baxter-Birney (Meg), Susan Dey (Jo), Eve Plumb (Beth), and Ann Dusenberry (Amy). Dorothy McGuire and William Schallert are the girls' parents, with Robert Young as Mr. Lawrence and Greer Garson as Aunt March. Richard Gilliland plays Laurie, William Shatner is Professor Bhaer, and Cliff Potts plays John Brooke.
The 1933, 1949, and 1994 theatrical versions of the story each have their own special pleasures, and the 1978 TV version stands alongside those better-known editions as a very entertaining rendition of the classic story.
What a thrill to anticipate finally seeing it again, and then being able to shelve the DVD permanently alongside our other copies of LITLE WOMEN. For me, this just might be the DVD release of the year. :)

I'd like to see that again. Intersting casting. I seem to remember it's having been run over two nights originally, like a mini mini-series?
I believe you're correct, Jacqueline, I think it was originally shown for two hours apiece on back-to-back evenings.
Incidentally, it was rerun once, perhaps a couple years later, and as far as I know it hasn't aired since...

A postscript for those interested in this DVD: the costumes are by the great Edith Head, and the musical score was written by Elmer Bernstein. This production was first-class all the way.
