Happy 70th Anniversary, Disneyland!
"To all who come to this happy place, welcome!"
Those words, uttered by Walt Disney as part of his immortal opening day speech at Disneyland on July 17, 1955, echoed through the park again today, on Disneyland's 70th anniversary.
As has been the case many years on July 17th, I was at the park bright and early today to celebrate the anniversary. The park was packed, but everyone was in a celebratory mood.
As has also been the case on some of the park's major anniversaries, such as the 2015 Diamond Celebration, commemorative park maps and buttons were handed out at the main gate.
Here's a shot of the special Lilly Belle train car circling the park this morning.
The It's a Small World ride debuted a new verse today which was written by Richard Sherman before his passing last year.
There was also a brief tribute to the Sherman Brothers in the Main Street Cinema today:
Over at the Opera House, the marquee was recently changed from red to blue. (This photo was taken earlier this month on July 3rd; the rest of the photos were taken today.)
We saw the new show WALT DISNEY - A MAGICAL LIFE, featuring an audioanimatronic Walt speaking for a few minutes.
There's an amazing exhibit to enjoy before the show which includes art, Disneyland memorabilia, and even re-creates Walt's Disneyland firehouse apartment:
Just a few examples of the beautiful Disneyland art on display:
I intend to visit this exhibit again in the future, when there's more time and smaller crowds.
As I've mentioned here before, I feel enormous gratitude to Walt Disney not simply for Disneyland, but because I worked there many years ago and met my husband there. We truly do owe a great personal debt to Walt Disney.
Happy 70th Birthday, Disneyland!
