Farewell to Spunky Homeschool
I was sorry to learn today that one of my favorite homeschooling blogs, Spunky Homeschool, is shutting down. This was a great site for both information and discussion regarding a wide range of homeschooling issues.
Best wishes to Karen (aka Spunky) as she departs the blogosphere.

Too bad, I agree. It's a terrific blog. And don't her remarks sound odd, the sarcasm to her well-wishers? I wonder what happened??
It was certainly unexpected news given the caliber and regularity of her work. I am very sorry to see her go. I was tempted for a moment to check the calendar and see if it were April 1st!
Her sudden departure raises some interesting issues -- what (if anything) does a blogger "owe" a devoted readership when he or she decides to cease blogging?
Best wishes, Laura
Very good question. I suppose there's no real obligation since blogging is an individually-driven enterprise, but from an ethical and/or moral point of view? And given her stated religiousness and Christianity, it actually seems unkind. I mean, one doesn't wake up one day and say, "Okay, now I'm going to be a ship's captain!" and then pack a bag and leave the house. I find it hard to believe that she has no idea what precipitated this or what she's going to do next. "Move forward" just is a content-less phrase. Perhaps someone offended her deeply or there's some emotional issue that was absolutely not apparent to us. On the other hand, if she really feels that she woke up and said, "The blog is over", with no reason she can point to, I'd be very alarmed if I were her friend or in her family.
What do you think?
I appreciate your sharing your thoughts.
I've mulled this a bit and think on a human level, I'd like to have someone whose work I've invested time reading on a regular basis give a little more of an explanation -- if for no other reason than for caring readers to be assured all is well.
I'm reluctant to engage in too much speculation, given that we know so little. It did cross my mind that I've seen a couple other Christian bloggers quit or slow down their work because they felt blogging was interfering in some way with their family life or their Christian walk; based on her update today, perhaps her quitting is something along those lines.
This is an interesting angle about the blogosphere and the relationship created between bloggers, and fellow bloggers/readers...and what blogging "etiquette" should be when someone departs. Many, many blogs, of course, simply go dormant and die off, but when you have one that's active and a vital part of the blogging community, it seems a little different.
In any event, I wish her well and will miss visiting her site!
Best wishes, Laura
For those who may be interested in additional useful educational links…..in particular links that are useful for homeschooling….. please go to Bookyard’s Educational section located at http://www.bookyards.com/links.html?category_id=2016

Bookyards, thanks for the link. There definitely are several good sites and it's very interesting to read them all. I look forward to checking yours out.
Laura, I agree with you entirely. My main problem is that it doesn't seem Christian (which is about loving, above all) to drop people who care about you, nor to be snide to them on top of it (in the comments). It verges on hypocrisy, it seems to me. But, yes, I wish her well.
Best to you too!
